This intuitive interaction with the forces of nature creates a dynamism that lends itself to the indoor-outdoor dialogue that is at the heart of architecture. It is a quirky house: asymmetrical and interesting, with surprises around every corner. Prioritizing high quality materials over ornamentation, the designer wove a sense of craftsmanship into each room. The pivoted Jali screen is designed with different diagonal orientations of the Terracotta tiles to avoid direct sunlight and to facilitate the flow of winds.

Talking about the Landscape, we wanted it to overpower the architecture and interior. There are two small gardens at the entrance of the project and a garden at the back. There are potted plants on the front facade which adds to the beauty of the building. The main attraction of the whole project is the terrace garden on the top, as specified by the clients we had to utilize the common terrace in the best manner possible and in the city like Ahmedabad where there are high temperatures in summers, greens are the best solution to it.

This necessitated that the compound wall of the building, along the length of the forest reserve, be taller, at least 8 to 9 feet in height. This setting of the site situated between a semi covered stilt on one side and a tall wall on the other side immediately gave the site an ambivalent character that was animated by a certain quality of light and shadow. A certain kind of cavernous space which is washed by light from the sky to create a somber, yet cheerful, atmosphere. Once this spatial quality was identified and discovered, the intention of the project was to enhance this spatial quality through careful and minimal spatial articulation.

For this devout Rajput family, obeisance to the Gods upon entering the home as well as leaving was an ingrained ritual, integral to their age-old traditions. K. N. Associates took note, which was a straightforward one. To be used by an extended family with three generations living under the same roof, five bedrooms were required—all in a Vastu-compliant layout. K. N. Associates, however, took the practicalities to another level, weaving interventions which introduce sculpture and installations as part of the design—all the time using local artists and craftsmen.

While conceiving the architecture for this home in Ahmedabad, one of our primary drivers was a response to the hot and dry summers in the city, with average daytime temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius. The form of the house is derived from its climactic orientation as well as shading devices that keep the internal spaces cool. Deep verandahs and overhangs, horizontal pergolas, and vertical louvers gently filter the fierce sun.
