    TERRACOTTA RESTAURANT | THE GRID

A zest for working with materials charged with positivity and spirit of the universe in consonance (harmony) culminating into a solution which was powerfully simple.

    Ideology

Reducing carbon footprints, serving a greater purpose.

    Project note

The main challenge of this project – a 2,700-square-foot space that had to be made into a restaurant with a thoughtful blend of the old-world and the contemporary – was its low budget.

On one hand was the need for glamour, luxury and comfort – the mainstays of fine-dining cuisine establishments that are so crucial in communicating the fineness of its calibre – and on the other, was the fact that space was much larger than the budget.

The short turnaround time – 45 days to be precise – added to the complexity of the task. The architects resolved to meet this challenge with tremendous positive energy, and that’s what drove them to choose natural and earthy materials which are charged with the energy and the spirit of the universe.

Use of natural elements such as the engraved stone that was brought up from the regions of RAJULA, a city situated in Gujarat with an odd random size of 8″ x 12″ and were installed randomly to give the restaurant a natural and authentic feel. Also, the other Antique Greystone that was installed in a break free form.

Devoting a great deal of thought to surface treatments, the Cosme restaurant is a blend of contemporary and neoclassical elements and replete with textural play.

Influenced by kirigami (a variation of origami), wooden slats create a three-dimensional pattern on the ceiling — which is complemented by the herringbone design of the marble floor (in honed and polished finishes) and the painted MDF slats — influenced by the facade treatment — for wall panelling with interesting wallpaper, broken into panels. The eatery offers a variety of seating options: sofas, a PDR, loungers, bar stools…

Space sings together with the use of a few materials and its techniques. The smaller details like the wooden fluting, the beveled edges of the mirrors, rounded corners, the stripes of the fabric and the blue & gold accents – together create an overall experience that takes you back in the 1944 era and serves you the class and richness.
