Tucked Within A 2 Acre Plantation, This Home Is An Ode To Serenity | Thidam Works

[Sassy_Social_Share]

Tucked into a corner of a lush 2 acre plantation off the Kanchipuram highway, this farmhouse is a quiet ode to sustainability and serenity. Surrounded by thriving groves of coconut, mango, and orange trees, the site offered a natural canvas for a home that would dissolve gently into its surroundings of rural landscapes—grounded in place and poetic in spirit.

Editor’s Note: Designed by Thidam Works, this residence embodies sustainability and serenity. Dense greenery envelops the home, creating a calming natural buffer. Strategically placed clerestory windows and skylights animate the interiors, casting changing patterns of light and shadow. Exposed brick walls and textured concrete elements ground the architecture in a tactile, honest material palette.

A House Hidden Within the Landscape

From the outset, the intent was clear. It was to create a dwelling within a 2 acre plot, that felt deeply rooted, yet visually unobtrusive. Strategically located away from the highway and flyover, dense greenery wraps the house, making its presence barely perceptible from the outside. This natural veil not only ensures privacy but also immerses the built form within a living, breathing landscape.

Architecture That Breathes with the Land

The architectural approach is simple yet profound—an effort to allow the house to breathe with the land. Instead of imposing on the site, the design responds to it with a quiet sensitivity. Responding to the orthogonal grid of the orchard, the design strategically orients the farmhouse to optimise visual connections with the surrounding plantation.

2 acre

Meandering pathways guide visitors toward the house, winding gently through the orchard and revealing the home through shifting views. These paths also encourage movement and pause—an invitation to experience the outdoors at a slower pace.

2 acre

Gardens That Evolve Naturally

The designers approached the 2 acre landscape around the farmhouse not as a decorative exercise but as an extension of the home’s lived philosophy. Rather than manicured lawns or rigid symmetry, the gardens evolve organically—responding to light, movement, and mood.

Life Beyond the Windows

The designers tuck intimate nooks into shaded corners, offering places to pause. Whether it’s an early morning spent with birdsong or a quiet evening with a cup of coffee, they design each space to hold a moment. They place bird feeders across the site, drawing native species and allowing the residents to witness life unfolding just beyond the windows.

Framing the Plantation

The layout, both inside and out, is visually soft and spatially composed to foster a sense of calm and retreat. The designers place expansive windows with care, opening them to curated vistas that capture the lush abundance of the plantation.

2 acre

Blurring Indoor and Outdoor

The lines between indoor and outdoor are intentionally blurred, allowing the orchard to become a living extension of the interior. Currently young, the trees have been anticipated in the design; as they mature, strategically positioned clerestory windows and skylights will frame the evolving canopies, casting dynamic patterns of light and shadow across the interiors.

2 acre

Spread across 2,400 sqft, the 2BHK home is a restrained yet warm composition of earth-toned materials. The layout adopts a seamless spatial arrangement, allowing the living and dining areas to unfold naturally into the landscape. The master bedroom and dining space open directly onto a freshwater pool, which sits nestled among the trees.

The designers treat the pool with a grey tone of IPS cement finish that enables it to reflect the hues of the sky and respond to the breeze—quietly echoing the surrounding environment. Beyond its role as a leisure feature, they reuse the water from the pool to irrigate the plantation, underscoring a sustainable, closed-loop relationship between home and habitat.

Materiality Shapes the House

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the farmhouse’s identity. Exposed brick walls bring texture and tactility, while textured concrete elements lend a modern yet unpretentious strength. Flooring in cool Kota stone offers a grounded, barefoot luxury, complementing the robust Sadharhalli stone. The designers selected each material not only for its visual and tactile appeal but also for its natural responsiveness, ensuring the house stays thermally comfortable across seasons.

The bathroom walls are finished with IPS-treated lime plaster, chosen for its breathability, durability, and low environmental impact. Together, these materials anchor the farmhouse in its context while reinforcing a quiet, lasting sustainability.

This farmhouse is more than a seasonal escape—it is a contemplative space that exists in rhythm with the land, the light, and the sky. It is a home that listens before it speaks, quietly attuned to its context and deliberate in every detail.

Thoughtfully concealed yet deeply connected, it stands as a reminder that architecture need not dominate the landscape to leave an impression. Sometimes, it is in the quietest gestures that the most enduring experiences are made.
