This Modern And Chic Apartment Is Rooted In A Deep Sense Of Calm | Studio Homzstead

When the family approached my studio, their brief was clear yet inspiring: to create a home that felt modern and chic, open to colour, and rooted in a deep sense of calm. Aria a 1500-square-foot apartment in Mumbai-grew from that vision. We named it Aria for its sense of lightness and flow, much like air or a musical composition that moves effortlessly. Designed for a family of five-parents, two sons, and a daughter-in- law-the space primarily caters to the three main residents, with the flexibility to welcome everyone during visits.

Design Philosophy: Curves, Confluence & Craftsmanship

Our design intent was simple. It was to soften the rigidity of urban architecture through modern and chic, fluid lines and gentle forms. Every element from the ceiling contours to the furniture profiles responds to this idea of movement.

The Living Room sets the tone for the entire home. The ripple ceiling above the main seating area becomes the sculptural heart of the space, crafted in custom plasterwork to evoke a sense of rhythm and expansion.

We designed all the seating to echo this softness-curved, deep-seated, and layered in tactile textures. A bespoke chandelier anchors the ceiling feature, while an 8-foot Tree of Life mural adds a strong artistic focal point and sense of narrative.

Functional Elegance

The kitchen contrasts the softer palette of the living spaces with bold, luxurious finishes. Gold-hued black cabinetry, reeded glass, and textured stone surfaces create depth, while Moroccan-inspired patterned flooring adds a touch of playfulness and global influence.

The Modern Mandir (Mandir/Guest/Study Room)

For this multi-functional space, we wanted the Mandir to feel like an architectural statement rather than an addition. Its sculptural, curved form-clad in patinated metal and set on a smooth concrete-finish plinth—becomes the true focal point of the room.

The interplay of material and form gives the space a quiet monumentality, while the delicately carved Om mandala cut-out adds a spiritual layer to the composition. The result is a piece that seamlessly bridges tradition and contemporary design.

The Terracotta Embrace (Sons’ Bedroom)

This room celebrates colour with a full terracotta drench that feels warm and immersive. The curved, textured wall and ceiling panels transform the space into a tactile, sculptural experience. Dark wood and cane details in the desk and wardrobe bring balance and a hint of global character.

The Sanctuary (Parents’ Bedroom)

In contrast, this room is quiet and cocooning, blending soft burgundy tones with warm neutrals to create a refined, layered palette. The custom bed and fluted headboard form a gentle alcove of calm, framed by a border of Asian Paints textured wallpaper that adds depth and tactility. The same wallpaper detail continues subtly on the wardrobe, tying the space together with understated elegance. The overall effect is restful yet sophisticated, grounded in warmth and craftsmanship.
