  • This Retail Store Design Embraces Earthy Palette in the City of Mumbai | Spacevalue Architects

Set in a densely knitted office area in the main city of Mumbai, the site is a compact 850 sq.ft space enveloped by adjacent retail store designs, leaving only the roadside open for light, ventilation, and accessibility. When the owner of Cotton Cottage India approached us to renovate their existing retail store designs across India, he was clear about his needs. He wanted to revamp the earlier design theme and adapt new ideas with cost-effective, dismantleable shelving solutions. He desired the space to be very functional and set a benchmark in the market for its brand. Thus, the simple strategy the designer applied was to make the experience synonymous with the brand.

Today, in the era of the “experience economy,” the idea is that products and services can outcompete by creating an experience that customers value.

Functionality, brand identity, creativity and uniqueness, budget, and schedule were the main focus areas of the project. Well-planned and executed retail interior designs increase stores’ operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and ultimately, revenue.

    Spatial Layout

While planning a layout, key focus areas were the circulation of customers allocation for various purposes such as storage, staff facilities, administrative offices, point-of-sale counters, and merchandise displays.

The products being retailed included women’s wear, contemporary clothing for men, kids’ wear, and jewellery under the tagline “Beyond Usual,” which is the newest addition to their wide array of products.

The entire palette is put together cautiously, reflective of the clothing business, whose tagline is “Handmade Goodness,” the client is engaged in. The overall design concept, the idea of displays, the colours, and the material palette of grey, white, and wooden furniture were derived from the Indian culture of hand-block printing.

    Contrast Palette

The colorful display of clothing contrasts strikingly with the muted grey background. The design concept for the interior and exterior blends simplicity with playfulness seamlessly.

The design displays merchandise on ply shelves, which combine open and niche spaces made from pre-laminated sheets and supported by MS angles. Racks for jewellery with a mirror are distinct from other racks, providing good space to display the products as well as try them. The billing desk stands at the entrance of the store.

    Detailing of Terracotta Plates

The high-gloss black laminate background beautifully sets off the wooden frame-like element. It wraps around the desk and transforms into a tabletop on the other side. The wall behind the billing desk features added detailing of terracotta plates with wooden handblocks. The factory uses these for printing. The entire billing desk stands out with raftered ply panelling, which extends to the store’s ceilings.

Columns in the store serve as display shelves, showcasing various specialised prints. They also play a key role in visual merchandising, highlighting the unique offerings of the store. Gondolas in the centre act as both display counters and storage units. The central part of the store, with a dark grey exposed ceiling, is clad with wooden-finished aluminium louvres with cane hanging lights.
