With the grand entrance, Kanyaka stands out through its lush green surroundings and contemporary modern tropical house elevation. Spanning 4,200 sq. ft. in the central part of Calicut, Kanyaka features a sit-out area followed by a long passage that leads to an external open courtyard.
Editor’s Note: “In the heart of Kerala’s verdant landscape, this residence whispers the language of modern contemporary tropical architecture. Soaring double-height spaces and generous openings invite the outside in, crafting breathtaking panoramas that become part of daily life. More than just a dwelling, this home transcends conventional design, embracing a contemporary ethos where aesthetics and functionality merge seamlessly with the beauty of nature.” ~Simran Khare
The Modern House Elevation Stands Out Through Its Lush Green Surroundings | En Haut Architects
Common spaces flank this passage, with the formal living area to the left of the entrance. A mood board of silver grey, lavender blue, and dark elements highlights the space, enriching the overall ambiance.
The double-volume space and long openings adjacent to the green surroundings further elevate the atmosphere.
Next to the living area is the dining space, which is connected to a patio on the left and stairs on the right. This area serves as the central hub for family gatherings.
The kitchen, which is larger than the work area, overlooks the side open yard and opens to a multi-purpose deck space.
The double-volume dining space ensures that communication flows throughout the structure.
The client emphasized that privacy should be a key element of the design. Consequently, a separate portion of the house is dedicated to the wet areas and bedrooms.
The ground floor includes two bedrooms with an interior theme of beige and plywood walnut textures. On the first floor, a central passage offers a clear view of the ground level.
This floor features a home theatre, two additional bedrooms, an upper living area, and a space dedicated to indoor games for kids. Trees buffer and isolate the home theatre, creating a serene retreat, while the open terrace amplifies the tropical ambiance with its grey textures and intricate brick cladding patterns.
The combination of the calm context and contrasting palettes of the exterior and interior provides a unique experience, defining the residence’s individual tropical contemporary style.
