  • The House Facade Sits In A Picturesque Scene | Panji Associates

Against the backdrop of the clear blue sky, the house facade sits in perfect harmony, creating a picturesque scene. Isiri is situated in Navanagar, Bagalkot district, Karnataka. The site faces east and covers an area of 4,800 sq. ft. This residence is for a family of four. To tackle the hot and dry climate, we tried to intertwine nature with our design. Landscaping is an integral part of our planning; it helps regulate the temperature inside while invigorating the senses. Double-height ceilings and wide openings offer unobstructed views of the tranquil gardens, allowing natural light and cool breezes to flow in, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside.

Adding to the character of the house facade is a bulls-eye arch that overlooks the road. The interiors make use of materials like exposed brick and wood with warm undertones. The light-coloured walls and floors complement the warmth of teak wood and brick, creating bright and cosy spaces that don’t require artificial lighting during the day.

The double-height living room is the heart of the house. The massive opening on its northern wall allows for a generous amount of diffused light inside, keeping the room flooded with natural light during the day.

    Lobby

The lobby of the house is a grand 16-foot-high entrance. We wanted it to be distinctive and pause-worthy. Tessellating moulded concrete blocks play with the sense of touch and the enigma of light.

While bringing the outside in and blurring the lines between the inside and outside, the opening also allows an occasional cool breeze to grace the space. The opening to the east adds to the same experience. The heart of the house thus remains cool even in the heat of Bagalkot’s summer.

    Pooja Room

The Pooja room is clad in teak wood and glass. Its transparency allows the eye to visually connect to the living areas. The light from the dining window illuminates the Pooja room as well. Its design is ornate, exemplifying its spiritual importance in the house.

The kitchen and pooja room blend in with the dining and living rooms while maintaining their own identities. Together, they make the spaces feel bigger and brighter. The open kitchen layout provides a seamless connection to the dining area. The full-length opening in the dining room graces the area with ample sunlight and a view of the east garden. Users can enjoy their meal while gazing at the view outside.

    Kitchen

The kitchen is situated in the southeast corner of the house, and it receives beautiful morning light that bounces off the front lawn. The light filters through the overhanging creepers and enters the space, creating a pleasant ambience. The owner expresses that this kitchen inspires them to cook.

The wood-panelled staircase with clean lines for railing against the backdrop of brick cladding resonates with the statement, ‘God is in The Details’. This elevates the experience of climbing the stairs.

The terrace that overlooks the main road is adorned with planters that not only obstruct the view of passers-by but also provide ample privacy to the residents. The bulls-eye arch situated at the centre of the terrace adds to the overall aesthetics of the space.

The overhang is unobstructed, which provides a sheltered space from harsh sunlight and rain while simultaneously providing a 180-degree view of the outdoors.

As a result, throughout the day, a well-curated atmosphere is maintained, making it an enjoyable space for users. The house’s eastern facade showcases a stunning interplay between the colours green and brown.

The lush green foliage blends seamlessly with the brown brick-clad walls, creating a beautiful harmony between nature and the man-made structure.
