Classic Indian Heritage Adorns This Mumbai Home | Royal Home Spaces

[Sassy_Social_Share]

In the heart of Mumbai’s buzzing Peddar Road stands a home that is a quiet rebel against the city’s hubbub. It was and always will be a symbol of classic Indian heritage. Today, it stands transformed—reimagined yet deeply rooted in its rich past.

The recent renovation was led by designers Gunjan Hukku and Vishal Nisar of Royal Home Spaces.
It preserves legacy while embracing a sense of the new. What began as minor upgrades soon turned into a full-scale project. It was driven by the residents’ desire for a modernised look while retaining the original aesthetic of Indian heritage. The result is a blend of Indian classicism and contemporary design. Every room tells a tale of detail and evolving style.

Living Room: A Portrait of Elegance

With vintage furniture pieces and standout armchairs redone with a floral print and a metallic PU polish this living space is a study in harmony that adds glamour and elegance to old-world charm. While new pieces were custom-made to mirror the elegance of the old, the same PU finish was extended to other sofas for visual cohesion.

Warmth flows in through soft fabric wall paper with moulding , polished marble flooring, and layered Persian-style rugs. Black marble tables and brass chandeliers complement the setting, while decor accents—books, candles, planters—add a lived-in feel. A walnut wood bar unit and a cozy TV lounge round off the space, making it both refined and inviting.

Dining Room: Open and Opulent

The dining room exudes a luxurious neo-classical aesthetic with a touch of Indian heritage charm, offering a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort. From the adjacent space, the dining room opens up via wide wooden-framed sliding doors, allowing it to blend with the adjoining living room and bar area. This creates a fluid, open-plan layout that encourages hosting and conversation. This dining room brings together timeless elegance and cultural richness with a refined, contemporary touch.

The highlight is the luxurious dining table featuring a marble-finish top, supported by intricately carved legs in a stunning metallic PU finish, which adds a subtle sheen and modern sophistication. Matching chairs, also finished in metallic PU, are upholstered in classic fabrics, with two accent chairs showcasing traditional Indian prints for visual interest. A statement gold chandelier above enhances the ambience with warm, ambient lighting. The setting is enriched with soft drapes, panelled walls, and rich wooden elements, while a beautifully detailed pooja unit adds a spiritual and decorative focal point. The space is a seamless blend of comfort, tradition, and understated opulence.

Informal Room: Warmth and Calm

This versatile room is a beautifully curated space that blends functionality with warm, modern aesthetics. Designed to serve as both a formal sitting area and a comfortable guest retreat, the room is enveloped in rich wooden paneling that flows seamlessly from the ceiling to the walls, creating a calming, cohesive atmosphere. A softly curved ceiling adds architectural fluidity, while vertical wooden slat windows gently diffuse natural light. A muted grey textured wall provides contrast, enriching the serene ambience. Thoughtfully integrated into the design is a sleek, built-in wardrobe that offers ample storage without disrupting the room’s clean, minimalist look—making it both elegant and highly functional.

Guest Bedroom: Gracefully Grounded in History

This guest bedroom exudes quiet elegance, seamlessly blending Indian heritage with modern sophistication. Restored 60-year-old pieces—a carved wooden bed, ornate chair, and classic dresser—retain their vintage charm, refreshed with a soft PU finish.

A floor-to-ceiling oak veneer artifact unit adds warmth and vertical interest, while the custom wardrobe pairs rattan jaali with matte glass and white PU framing for a refined, textural touch. Soft floral wallpaper, layered neutral drapes, and a Jaipur Rugs carpet ground the space in comfort and artisanal richness.

Master Bedroom 1: Contemporary Comfort, Rooted in Memory

This serene retreat sets the mood with neutral tones and earthy textures. A tan leatherette finish breathes life into a 25-year-old bed, while restored wardrobes blend seamlessly into the updated interiors. Marble wall panels, fluted detailing, and soft gold inlays introduce subtle opulence. The reading corner, elevated with a rounded armchair and natural rug, invites peaceful moments, while the marble-backed vanity and curated lighting add the much-needed balance.

Master Bedroom 2: Quiet Luxury

This bedroom exudes understated luxury, blending soft neutrals with rich textures for a warm, refined retreat. The four-poster bed, featuring a fluted brown headboard, serves as a striking focal point, layered with plush bedding and a cozy knitted throw. Fluted wood details and classic wall panelling add architectural depth, while oak flooring and a jute rug infuse natural warmth. A fluted wooden ceiling band subtly ties the design together. With curated pieces like a sleek taupe dresser, recliner, and soft sheers that filter in natural light, the space feels both elegant and effortlessly inviting.

Daughter’s Bedroom: Whimsy with Purpose

This daughter’s bedroom is a dreamy blend of whimsy and warmth, designed to inspire creativity, comfort, and play. Set in a soft palette of mauves, blush pinks, and warm neutrals, the space features light wood flooring and custom nature-themed wallpaper that adds a gentle, artistic charm. A curved dusty pink study desk with a playful polka-dot magnetic glass backdrop encourages imagination.

A dreamy white lace tepee over a plush peach-toned floor seat creates a cozy reading nook by the window. The mauve velvet daybed, styled with an oversized bunny-ear backrest and layered cushions, serves as both a lounging and sleeping zone. Floor-to-ceiling blush cabinetry with arched niches adds character and ample storage. Finished with pastel accents, plush toys, and soft lighting, this thoughtfully designed room offers a magical, nurturing retreat for a growing child.

A Palace Reimagined

The Maharaja’s Pad is no longer just a home from another time. It is a beautifully layered retreat that embraces its regal Indian heritage while opening its doors to modern living. Each room echoes a thoughtful dialogue between old and new and between memory and function. In a city that never slows down, this home offers a quiet celebration of heritage, with just the right touch of now.
