Retail interiors often need to capture attention immediately. Mimosa at City of Dreams takes a quieter approach. Instead of relying on an abundance of finishes, colour, or visual graphics, StudioJH uses a restrained material palette, tactile surfaces, and carefully controlled lighting to shape the interior. This approach creates a contemporary retail environment that feels warm, grounded, and refined. It also keeps the clothing at the centre of the experience.
StudioJH designed the 67.1-square-metre store with earthy materials and soft, neutral tones. The palette brings a grounded character to the highly active environment of the City of Dreams mall in Colombo. The designers respond to Mimosa’s identity through rammed earth, micro cement, pressed cement tiles, and colourful patterned cement tiles. Together, these materials create a modern interior without making the space feel overly polished or detached from its material character.
Mimosa Finds A Quiet Material Language At City Of Dreams | Studio JH
At the heart of the store, the designers introduce a substantial rammed-earth feature wall. Its warm ochre tone immediately establishes the interior palette and brings an almost elemental quality to the contemporary retail setting. Horizontal layers and subtle variations within the earth create a surface that changes with the light. They add depth and texture without relying on additional decoration. The wall works both as an architectural element and as a backdrop for the brand, with the illuminated Mimosa lettering carefully positioned against its natural surface.
Using rammed earth within a shopping mall presented a particular technical challenge. Unlike a conventional decorative finish, the material required careful consideration of weight, transportation, handling, and construction methods. The design and construction teams therefore studied the existing mall structure to ensure they could execute the feature wall safely. This technical complexity became an important part of the architectural process. The objective was not simply to recreate the appearance of rammed earth. The designers wanted to introduce the physical presence and authenticity of the material itself. Through close coordination between the design and construction teams, they successfully integrated the feature into the mall environment while maintaining the intended architectural expression.
Against the warmth of the rammed earth, micro cement provides a quieter and cooler counterpoint. Applied across the surrounding walls and ceiling surfaces, its subtle tonal variation creates a continuous envelope that allows the more tactile materials to stand out. Rather than competing with the merchandise, the micro-cement surfaces form a neutral architectural background, giving the store a sense of continuity and visual calm. The reception counter introduces another layer of material expression. Its façade is articulated through small-format cement tiles arranged in a composition of soft, earthy tones. The repetition of the tiles creates a subtle rhythm across the curved form of the counter, while the variation in colour prevents the surface from appearing overly uniform. The eƯect is decorative but deliberately restrained—adding character through craftsmanship rather than applied ornament.
The use of cement tiles continues the material language while introducing moments of colour and pattern. In a retail environment dominated by garments, these surfaces provide an architectural layer that complements rather than competes with the changing colours and textures of the clothing collection. The material palette therefore works almost like a supporting framework: earthy enough to establish identity, neutral enough to remain timeless, and tactile enough to reward closer observation.
Lighting plays an equally important role. Rather than relying solely on general illumination, the store uses a combination of recessed lighting, track lighting and concealed warm illumination. Light is integrated into architectural edges and beneathelements such as the reception counter, creating subtle pools of warmth across the floor and surfaces. The layered approach gives the relatively compact interior a sense of depth and allows the materials to reveal their texture.
The storefront continues this restrained architectural language. Large glazed openings provide visual connections between the mall circulation and the interior, allowing the merchandise and mannequins to become part of the architectural composition. The central entrance frames the reception area and rammed-earth wall beyond, creating a clear visual axis into the store. From the mall, the warm earth-toned interior contrasts gently with the brighter surrounding circulation spaces.
Perhaps the most defining quality of the Mimosa store is its balance between material richness and visual restraint. Each finish has been selected to contribute something specific: the rammed earth brings warmth and permanence; micro cement establishes calmness and continuity; cement tiles introduce rhythm, colour and craft; while lighting brings the materials together into a cohesive atmosphere.
The project demonstrates how a relatively compact retail interior can establish a strong identity without depending on excessive visual elements. Instead, its character emerges from the honesty of its materials, the precision of its detailing and the relationship between texture, light and space. At City of Dreams, Mimosa becomes more than a container for clothing. It is a carefully composed environment in which architecture quietly supports the brand experience.
The earthy palette and tactile surfaces provide a sense of warmth and familiarity, while the contemporary detailing ensures that the store remains firmly rooted in its modern retail context. In this balance between raw material and refined execution, Mimosa at City of Dreams finds its architectural expression—quiet, tactile and distinctly grounded.
