Sukoon is a 2500 sq.ft G+2 open-to-sky courtyard home in Vadodara designed as a calm, tactile, and nature-connected home. Conceived for a family of six, the project explores the idea of slowing down everyday living through thoughtful spatial planning. A restrained material palette reinforces this calm and intentional approach. The clients initially envisioned a monochromatic home filled with greenery. The design gradually evolved into a warm Japandi-inspired space rooted in simplicity, functionality, and material honesty. Lime-plastered walls and ceilings, natural wood, cane, linen, and handcrafted details create a soft and atmosphere. Together, these carefully selected materials bring warmth, balance, and a sense of quiet endurance to the home.

One of the defining features of the project is the open-to-sky courtyard positioned at the center of the house, bringing in natural light and ventilation across levels. A key design intervention involved transforming the builder-proposed square courtyard opening into a circular window, softening the architectural geometry and aligns it with the overall Japandi language.
Another major spatial intervention was the removal of the powder toilet beneath the staircase, allows the first two steps to extend into a sculptural platform that now houses a custom-made wooden artwork representing the family of six.
Custom details and material experimentation play a crucial role in defining the identity of Sukoon. From raw wooden ledges and handcrafted cane lighting to a custom dining table crafted from a natural wooden log, every element contributes to the home’s quiet character. Each detail was thoughtfully designed to feel intentional yet understated.
Inspired by a Bali Airbnb experience, extensive on-site trials were conducted to achieve the perfect lime plaster finish that eventually became the soul of the home. Through thoughtful interventions, tactile materials, and emotionally driven spaces, This courtyard home emerges not merely as a styled residence, but as a lived-in calm designed to nurture connection, warmth, and everyday stillness.
The home balances calmness with moments of individuality and contrast. While the ground and first floors maintain a serene neutral palette, the second floor was intentionally designed as a vibrant entertainment zone.
Originally planned as two enclosed rooms, the space was reimagined into an open lounge and home theater with bold black-and-white flooring, a wave-like curved ceiling highlighted in rust tones, green leather seating, and flexible floor-level mattress seating that transforms into a dance floor during gatherings.
In contrast to the minimal language of the rest of the house, the kids bedroom embraces a playful Pinterest-inspired aesthetic with pastel tones, a custom bunk bed, slide, and activity zones designed to celebrate childhood and imagination.
