“Luxury today is not about ornamentation anymore. A space where materials, movement and light quietly shape everyday living.”

Designing a Contemporary Family House

Designed as the family house of Bedi and her husband in Greater Kailash 1, the 3,500 sq.ft home unfolds as an engaging exploration of contrast, continuity and layered materiality. Rather than adhering to a singular stylistic theme, the residence embraces an eclectic and evolving design language where contemporary forms coexist with classical details, sculptural interventions and tactile warmth.

At the centre of the spatial composition lies the foyer, designed not merely as a circulation spine but as the emotional axis of the house. Acting as a threshold between atmospheres, the foyer divides the residence into distinct experiences of light and shadow. One side opens into bright, more expansive social spaces flooded with natural light, while the other transitions into quieter, moodier and more intimate zones.

Foyer as the Pause Point

“The foyer became the pause point of the house,” explains Bedi. “It creates a psychological shift between the different energies of the home. We wanted the experience of moving through the space to feel carefully curated and fluid.”

Movement plays a defining role within the layout. The dining and family lounge are envisioned as interconnected social spaces where circulation remains constant and uninterrupted. Flooring transitions subtly articulate these shifts in function and mood, creating moments of spatial segregation without disrupting openness. Inspired by the visual rhythm of piano keys, the flooring composition becomes a sculptural design intervention in itself.

The Heart of Everyday Gatherings

Designed for a couple who frequently entertain, the residence prioritises warmth and collectiveness over formality. The family lounge emerges as the emotional heart of the home, conceived as a large, welcoming environment where friends and family can gather naturally around conversations, food and shared moments. Connected naturally to the dining area, the lounge balances openness with intimacy through layered textures, soft tonalities and sculptural furniture arrangements.

“We wanted people to instantly feel at home here,” says Bedi. “The family house is designed around hosting, conversations and comfort. The lounge and dining almost behave like one large social environment.”

A Language of Materials

Throughout the family house, a carefully curated palette of recurring materials establishes visual cohesion. Dyed oak, Aresbecato marble, textured veneers, bamboo detailing, leathered stone finishes and sculptural metal accents appear repeatedly across different spaces in evolving forms. Rather than overwhelming the home, these repetitions create rhythm and continuity, allowing each room to feel connected to the larger architectural language.

The design intentionally avoids assigning rigid themes to individual spaces. Instead, the residence adopts an eclectic vocabulary where contemporary minimalism intersects with classical detailing and handcrafted interventions. This layered sensibility is particularly evident in the guest suite, which draws inspiration from the intimacy and charm of boutique hospitality spaces.

Cozy and Chic Bedroom

Conceived as a cozy and chic retreat, the guest bedroom balances warmth with sophistication through panelled detailing, soft textures and subtle tonal layering. Open zipper-like panelling elements introduce visual breaks within larger surfaces, interrupting monotony while adding depth and rhythm to the architecture. Classical influences subtly coexist alongside contemporary forms, reinforcing the home’s larger narrative of juxtaposition.

“There is a sense of layering in every room,” notes Bedi. “Not just in terms of materials, but emotionally too. Every layer adds softness, balance and warmth to the experience of the house.” The layering continues within the master suite, where tactile richness and restrained luxury define the atmosphere. Wrapped in warm tones and textured finishes, the bedroom incorporates custom silk wallcoverings from Phi Wallpapers, boucle-upholstered detailing and vintage-inspired furniture pieces that create a deeply cocooned environment.

The dual his-and-her washrooms extend the residence’s exploration of contrast through colour and materiality. One embraces lighter, softer finishes while the other adopts a darker and more atmospheric palette. Yet despite their differences, both spaces remain visually connected through recurring materials and detailing strategies.

The Art of Light and Material

One of the most striking moments within the residence unfolds in the master bathroom, where a skylight introduces shifting natural light across dramatic black forest marble surfaces. Leathered wall finishes contrast polished flooring, while a monolithic basin carved from the same stone block transforms functionality into sculpture.

Across the home, lighting plays an equally sculptural role. An origami-inspired installation by Ankon Mitra anchors the dining space, while sculptural pieces from Studio Aurawala punctuate quieter corners with artistic intensity. Furnishings from Sarita Handa, rugs by Jaipur Rugs and curated décor from West Elm further enrich the layered visual narrative.

Many of the furniture pieces throughout the residence were custom designed and tailor-made by Sage Haus specifically for the home, allowing the studio to weave together the personalities, habits and lifestyle rituals of its residents into the architecture itself.

Art and collected objects remain deeply integrated into the interiors. Works sourced through ArtIncept, Rukshaan Art, Bhuwal Prasad, collected pieces from Bali and personal travel memorabilia add emotional depth to the home, transforming it from a designed environment into a lived and evolving narrative. Ultimately, the residence reflects Sage Haus’ larger philosophy of emotional luxury, where architecture is not defined by excess, but by atmosphere, memory and the subtle orchestration of experience.

“We were never trying to create a perfect show home,” reflects Bedi. “We wanted to create a space that feels layered, intimate and deeply human. A home that evolves beautifully with the people living in it.”
