Editor’s note : ‘Traditional roof and minimal exteriors in contrast with modern interior twists’ Pujara House by Flamingo Architects and Nidhi Thacker Associates displays mellow and minimal facades, though upon entrance the grand and modern interiors will surprisingly greet the visitors. ~ Aditi Shah (editor)

In the hot and dry climate of Kutch, the layout of the home was carefully designed so as to seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, while achieving enough passive cooling.

The 3-bedroom house is spread across 3265 Sq.ft with each room enjoying a view of the lush garden. The home stretches across the linear plot, with two bedrooms on the ground floor and one on the first.

The residence is essentially a serene collection of pitched-roof units, brought together internally by premium quality materials such as wooden veneer and Italian marble.

First impressions of the house from outside are of sweeping sloping roofs and generous overhangs, designed to protect from sun and intermittent coastal rain.

On windy days, one can sit by the large corner windows to enjoy uninterrupted views of the garden, with curtains blowing in the wind. The attention to detail is seen across the house, such as in the layering of handmade tiles along the ceiling edges, or the perfectly symmetrical television unit backdrop.

The pyramidal ceiling enhances the feeling of spaciousness and volume, and continuous wooden paneling adds to the laid-back luxury.

Beginning from the foyer, generous double-heighted volumes greet one into the home. Walls are seamlessly cladded in Italian marble and the high ceilings are rendered in wooden laminate.

In this setting, chandeliers and a glimmer of picture lights add to the relaxed yet opulent resort-vibe. The presence of a linear courtyard with a shallow pool, is a delightful insert, almost forming the core of the home.

Overgrown vegetation and cool blue mosaic tiles are pleasing to the eye, and bring a sense of leisure.

Family spaces such as the dining area and living room are bedecked with plush leather chairs, textured stone surfacing on walls and brushed with ample natural light. An emerald green cushioned insert above the dining area is an interesting design feature.

Across the interiors, glossy marble flooring gleams with light. Moving from veined black in the entrance and foyer area towards a speckled cream/beige shade, the flooring sets an elegant and glamorous tone throughout.

Keeping the vertical connections open and light, the sculptural staircase is a design highlight. The metal staircase with a geometric brushed- metal railing is perfectly detailed, cladded in a dark wood veneer.

Textures play a major role, from glossy, shimmering stone on walls, to the exteriors which are rendered in a grainy, spackled plaster, along with dimpled sandstone.

Further inwards, the bedrooms are zones of quiet comfort seeped in splendor, enhanced with superior quality materials in wholesome ways. The master bedroom on the ground floor extends out into an intimate TV lounge, designed with low, extended seating and black-out blinds.

Pin tucked bed backs and handpicked upholstery complement the cozy bed spaces. The play of wooden texture is explored as patterns in different bedrooms; with parallel wooden joists on the pyramidal ceiling or as continuous surfaces.

Altogether, the Pujara House is a glimmering luxurious home with modern amenities, breathing effortlessly with nature. The home and lush gardens invite birdsongs, almost transporting one back to the tranquil resorts of tropical island destinations.
