  • This 1475 sq. ft. Home Reflects the Essence of Zen Philosophy | Studio Soma

Studio Soma designed Project Zenova, a 1475 sq. ft. residence inspired by the philosophy of Zen, where simplicity, balance, and mindfulness shape everyday living. The designers rooted the home in Vastu principles while embracing a contemporary design language that feels both expressive and serene. The result is a space that is calm, colorful, and peaceful, yet layered with detail and character.

The name Zenova reflects the essence of the home—Zen philosophy, symbolising calm, balance, and clarity, paired with nova, representing a new beginning. The designers translated this philosophy into the design by thoughtfully considering every element to create a sense of harmony, both visually and energetically.

    Vastu-Led Spatial Planning

The home unfolds through a well-planned layout of four bedrooms and four bathrooms, each positioned in accordance with Vastu. Rather than limiting the design, these principles became a guiding framework, shaping the flow and functionality of the space. The planning ensures that movement within the home feels intuitive, with each zone transitioning effortlessly into the next.

Zen Philosophy in the Living Room

Guided by Zen philosophy, the living room sets a distinct tone for Zenova—bold yet balanced. The space features an elegant use of exotic marble that elevates its visual language while reflecting a sense of harmony. The marble becomes a statement element, complemented by custom-designed furniture, including a bespoke dining table and centre table crafted specifically for the home. These carefully curated pieces enhance functionality while adding individuality, creating a living space that feels both characterful and serene.

    A Mindful Dining Experience

Reflecting the principles of Zen philosophy, the dining space balances artistry with simplicity. A carefully curated ombre wall transitions softly across tones, creating a sense of depth and quiet movement. The designers thoughtfully complemented this backdrop with Claymen installations, introducing a sculptural and contemplative quality to the composition. Together, the interplay of colour, texture, and art transforms the dining area from a purely functional space into a mindful and immersive experience.

Materiality plays a defining role throughout the home. In the bedrooms, the design shifts towards a softer, more tactile expression. Stone veneer walls introduce an earthy richness, grounding the spaces with their natural texture. The designers paired this with textured paint finishes that add subtle depth without overwhelming the calmness of the rooms. Together, these elements create an environment that feels warm, layered, and restful.

    Textured Wall Design

A unique feature across the home is the use of wooden half-sphere elements—delicate yet impactful details that add a playful dimension to the walls. The designers often combine these with carefully selected tiles, creating compositions that come alive through light and shadow. The design intentionally plays with lighting—both natural and artificial—to highlight these textures, allowing surfaces to shift and evolve throughout the day.

Each bedroom is designed as a personal retreat, where comfort meets clarity. In keeping with Vastu guidelines, mirrors have been thoughtfully concealed within wardrobes, ensuring they are not externally visible. This approach maintains both aesthetic minimalism and traditional alignment, resulting in spaces that feel clean and peaceful.

The color palette across Zenova has been curated with intention. Guided by Vastu, each hue has been selected not only for its visual appeal but also for the energy it brings into the space. Soft neutrals form the base, while gentle infusions of color add personality and warmth. This careful balance allows the home to feel vibrant yet composed, lively yet soothing.

    Vastu Furniture Placement

Furniture placement throughout the residence follows a similar philosophy of intention. Each piece has been positioned in alignment with Vastu, ensuring optimal orientation and usability. The furniture does not overpower the space but instead integrates seamlessly, allowing the architecture and materials to take center stage.

Bathrooms continue the narrative of understated elegance, with clean lines, refined finishes, and a clutter-free approach. These spaces are designed to feel fresh and functional while maintaining a consistent design language with the rest of the home.

    Interior Lighting Design

Lighting plays a transformative role in Zenova. Natural light is maximised wherever possible, enhancing the openness and positivity of the interiors. As daylight fades, layered artificial lighting takes over, highlighting textures, materials, and design details. This interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the spaces, making the home feel dynamic yet tranquil.

What makes Zenova truly special is its ability to hold contrasts naturally. Rooted in tradition, the home speaks a contemporary design language. Every detail feels intentional without becoming overwhelming. Rich colours bring vibrancy to the interiors while maintaining an inherent sense of calm.

At its core, Project Zenova is a reflection of meaningful design—where every choice, from material to placement, contributes to a larger narrative of harmony. It is a home that does not demand attention but quietly reflects with those who experience it.

The designers created a space where people don’t just see design—they deeply experience it.
