A young couple seeks a minimalistic, functional home with a calm and modern Japandi/Wabi-Sabi feel. They wanted a space to maximize utility without feeling cramped, including both a dining area and a study within a limited area.
The goal was to change a compact 2 BHK flat into a harmonious and open home that balances simplicity, function, and beauty. It reflects the Wabi-Sabi philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and minimalism.
This Home Is Designed To Maximize Utility For This Young Couple | Infinity Atelier
Viduran’s house takes inspiration from the founder’s first Wabi-Sabi holiday home in Kolkata. It embraces the Japandi style with its simple elegance and focus on natural textures. Despite its small size, the home emphasizes smart space planning, fostering a sense of openness and calm to maximize utility. The philosophy is about using less space while maximizing utility, ensuring every corner serves a purpose while remaining visually calm.
The home uses veneer, rattan, limocoat, glass, terrazzo, and select Duco finishes on cabinets and drawers. These materials offer a tactile, natural, and warm look while ensuring durability and simplicity.
Key pieces come from brands like H&M Home, Westside, Sunday Supper, Living Shapes, Whispering Homes, Half Dot, Mason Homes, and Modern Quest. Lamps were from Fig Living, Akway, and Ikiru, while soft furnishings were sourced from Studio 16, Studio Covers, and Amorada. Artistic accents and framed pieces from Craftico add personality and visual interest.
A notable feature of the home is the change from the original 3 BHK layout into a practical 2 BHK. One room was altered to accommodate both the study and dining area without sacrificing space, creating a smooth, multifunctional area. The demolition allowed for a custom terrazzo arch floor pattern that aligns perfectly with the fixed dining seating, blending design creativity with practical functionality.
The hall acts as the home’s centerpiece, balancing the functions of dining and study while keeping visual clutter to a minimum. The terrazzo floor arch matches the fixed seating, enhancing spatial flow and visual unity.
Simple furnishings and curated decor keep a light, airy atmosphere while ensuringwarmth through natural materials and artisanal textures.
Every design element is specifically chosen to reflect the Japandi/Wabi-Sabi ethos: simple, functional, and naturally beautiful while meeting the couple’s lifestyle needs.
Repurposed and natural materials like veneer, rattan, and limocoat were used where possible, supporting durability and a low environmental impact. The home focuses on thoughtful material selection and practical efficiency over excess, in line with sustainable design values.
Changing a 3 BHK into a highly usable 2 BHK required careful planning to prevent overcrowding. The solution was to create a combined dining and study area, ensuring sufficient movement while keeping openness.
Taking down the original wall required careful adjustments to the floor and layout. By integrating a custom terrazzo arch pattern that aligns with the fixed dining seating, the space remained cohesive, visually appealing, and functional.
Viduran’s house is a minimalistic yet warm home that embraces simplicity, functionality, and elegance. Every material, decor piece, and spatial decision contributes to a peaceful living environment, making it an ideal retreat for the young couple.
