Some homes are designed around a view. This home is designed around a fleeting evening moment, when the Arabian Sea sky turns saffron, rust and plum. That daily transition shapes Sea Between Stories, a 3,500-square-foot Bandra West apartment by The Concreate Story for Shantanu Powle and Saily Lad.

A Plan Built Around the View

The home sits above Mumbai’s sea link, with the coastline as a constant backdrop throughout the apartment. Starting from a bare shell, the design team rebuilt the plan to preserve water views from as many rooms as possible.

Sunset as a Palette

That sunset became more than inspiration; it became a palette. Warm plasters, burnished wood, tobacco tones, softened cream and deep earth colours echo the sunset’s amber-to-plum gradient. The rooms shift with the changing daylight, revealing different moods throughout the day rather than remaining static.

Contemporary Heritage Luxury

The design language the team settled on, what they call Contemporary Heritage Luxury, resists any single style label. Classical architectural detailing and antique, heirloom-inspired pieces sit comfortably next to open, functional contemporary planning. The home draws from Indian heritage, European references and bespoke local craftsmanship without committing to any single influence. That balance gives it a collected-over-time quality, rather than the feeling of being styled in one pass.

A Theatrical Arrival

That sense of accumulation starts at the front door. A double-door entrance and intricate checked flooring set up an arrival sequence that’s meant to feel theatrical rather than purely functional, a foyer that establishes the home’s layered visual grammar before you’ve even reached the living spaces.

Framing the Sea View

The living room is the emotional centre of the apartment: a dramatic chandelier, richly textured upholstery, bespoke furniture developed with Sarita Handa, and a handwoven Jaipur Rugs carpet all work to frame the sea view rather than compete with it. Timber ceiling detailing adds a quiet, traditional undertone, and a piano corner surrounded by family photographs turns one part of the room into something closer to a personal archive than a design feature.

Adjacent spaces carry the same intent. The dining area is lit with statement fixtures sourced from specialist vendors across India, paired with a wood-panelled bar finished in deeper greens and browns for a more intimate, evening-oriented mood.

The kitchen takes the opposite approach of a crisp, largely white volume, softened by small black-and-white tiled flooring and heritage-style cabinet hardware, so it reads as vintage-inflected without losing its functional clarity.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms diverge in tone deliberately. One leans fully into heritage character, built around a four-poster bed, curated books and an ornate ceiling fan that gives it an old-world weight.

The other is quieter and more contemporary, where muted colours and carefully placed art and lighting do the work instead of furniture scale.

Children’s room

A children’s room adds a third register entirely, a slide, a ball pit, furniture from Naina and Miffy Mansion, and a palette of blue, green, wood and white that keeps the playfulness from tipping into chaos.

Craft is where the project’s ambitions become most visible. Brass lighting handcrafted in Moradabad, intricately carved flooring commissioned from Jaipur for the master bathroom, and antiques sourced across Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi all point to a project built through specific regional makers rather than a single vendor catalogue.

The bathrooms extend this further, with veined stone, brass fittings and, in the master bath, floral mosaic inlay work that turns a utilitarian space into something closer to a retreat. A one-of-a-kind Murano mirror, sourced with Nilaya Anthology, functions almost as a piece of art in its own right and sums up the project’s underlying argument: that luxury here is less about scale than about individuality and the visible hand of craft.

What ultimately distinguishes Sea Between Stories isn’t any single room or object; it’s the way the apartment holds architecture, commissioned art, regional craftsmanship and the family’s own history in the same frame, all of it returning, again and again, to that changing light over the water outside.
