  • This Experience Gallery In Ahmedabad Is Dedicated To Temple Architecture | Space Karma Design Studio

    [Sassy_Social_Share]

The primary brief from our client was to create an experience centre gallery that would stand out in Ahmedabad, as there is no such space dedicated to the temple architecture industry in the city. They wanted it to be more than just a standard office—it needed to serve as a space where their work could be showcased to clients in a unique and impactful way.

At the same time, the space also had to function as a fully operational office, accommodating staff seating, a conference area, a cabin, and a pantry. However, the central focus was to design the main area as a showcase of their craft, ensuring that clients walking in would immediately experience the essence of their expertise and craftsmanship.

This Experience Gallery In Ahmedabad Is Dedicated To Temple Architecture | Space Karma Design Studio

    Primary materials used?:

We used marble and various stones as the primary materials throughout the gallery, as they are integral to temple architecture in India. We aimed to showcase their versatility and our clients’ expertise by pushing boundaries and exploring possibilities beyond traditional temple carvings. The marble partitions challenge the idea that marble belongs only in carvings. By pushing the material into new territory, the partitions reveal innovative possibilities while still honouring its timeless character.

As an experience centre gallery, we used the space to demonstrate how even the most unconventional ideas can take shape in marble. Our clients’ remarkable skill set and decades of experience allowed us to bring this vision to fruition, proving that with the right craftsmanship, marble can go beyond expectations.

A bit about the flooring in different parts of the space:

The flooring design flows seamlessly with the curved marble partitions, creating a cohesive and fluid aesthetic throughout the space. Near the experience centre gallery, the marble flooring is particularly unique—each piece was custom-cut and numbered since there was no standard shape, ensuring a perfect fit within the intricate design. We added brass inlays between these pieces to highlight their individuality and lend a refined touch.

This type of flooring is rarely seen in temples or homes, but as an experience centre, we set out to craft something beyond imagination — a true showcase of what marble can achieve. It demonstrates that we can bring anything our clients envision to life. The flooring, along with the partitions and miniature mandirs in the experience centre, utilizes various marble techniques, including jaali work, CNC laser cutting, carvings, and overlays, showcasing a range of craftsmanship under one roof.

In contrast, the cabin floor features a modern contemporary design with three different marble colors, adding a distinct character to the private space while maintaining harmony with the overall theme. This combination of artistry and technique creates an exclusive, out-of-the-ordinary experience for every client who visits.

    Ceiling design for the corridor

We thoughtfully planned the ceiling design for the corridor to harmonize with the flow of the partitions and flooring. We installed a handcrafted, origami-inspired wooden light fixture above the legacy wall, seamlessly continuing the design’s rhythm while adding a grounded, artisanal touch to the ceiling. This element not only enhances the aesthetic but also reflects the rooted and timeless essence of the space.

    Partition screens:

The space has only two doors—one at the entrance and one for the cabin. Beyond that, it features an open layout reminiscent of a temple. To define distinct areas like the staff seating, conference area, and experience gallery, we introduced elegant marble partitions. These curved screens overlap each other, subtly dividing the space while sparking curiosity about what lies beyond.

The stability of Prithvi, the Earth, grounds the space with towering marble partitions, their weight borne by delicate iron rods. This feat of craftsmanship, a seamless blend of ingenuity and artistry, defies logic and embodies the quiet strength of faith. The gallery itself is a rhythmic journey, a sacred dance. Layered partitions and curving corridors unfold gracefully, inviting discovery and echoing the depths of Patala, where hidden mysteries reside.

    Marble As The Main Material

We chose marble—a material symbolizing Swarg (heaven)—for its grandeur and divinity. Its use imbues the space with a sense of sacredness and elevates it to a celestial realm, reflecting the spiritual essence of the client’s work.

It is a heavy material, requiring a significant thickness to achieve the curves. However, we chose to keep the partitions open from the top and bottom to preserve the natural light coming through the large glass window behind them. This was the only source of daylight in the experience center. Natural light was critical to showcasing the intricate beauty of the client’s work. The vibrant colors of their materials, and the carvings ensure the space remained bright and inviting as a well-lit temple.

To support the weight of these partitions, we incorporated slender metal columns and poles. This structural solution was challenging, but with the client’s team executing it and our close collaboration on the design, the outcome was both functional and striking.

Each partition featured a distinct design. One with traditional jaali work and the other with a more contemporary aesthetic, showcasing symmetrical rectangular cut-outs. These contrasting styles added depth and character to the space while highlighting the craftsmanship and versatility of the material.

Arches and columns behind the temple model:

We did not execute the arches and columns. We developed the layout and plan and conceptualized everything that needed to be done. Since working with marble and employing specific techniques is our client’s area of expertise, we collaborated closely with their team during the execution phase. Their team played an equally significant role in bringing the vision to life. They ensured the perfect blend of design and craftsmanship.

    Wallpaper

The wallpaper is from the latest Sabyasachi x Nilaya collection by Asian Paints. We specifically chose this collection for its traditional yet timeless designs. It is perfectly aligning with the overall design language of the space. We selected the ochre/kesar tone, reminiscent of sandalwood with a subtle gold touch. This complements the space’s aesthetic and add a sense of warmth and richness.

Design thought behind the office cabin:

The cabin in the gallery is a perfect tribute to tradition and heritage while embracing modernism. It reflects the vision of the 4th generation now leading the legacy. We designed it to challenge the perception that marble is limited to traditional uses in temples or spiritual spaces. Instead, we showcased the materials in innovative, modern ways, highlighting their versatility and adaptability.

For instance, we crafted the centrepiece artwork behind the desk multiple small pieces of marble and precious stones. We demonstrated that art doesn’t have to be confined to oil or canvas. This unique creation adds depth and a contemporary edge to the space.

We designed the cabin as the “garbhagriha” (sanctum sanctorum) of the office. We reflected it as the innermost and most sacred space of a temple where the deity is placed. Similarly, we installed a lock-and-key door for this cabin, making it the central hub for critical decisions.

While the rest of the office is open and fluid, the cabin requires a door to ensure privacy, security, and its symbolic importance—just like the garbhagriha of a temple always has a door.
