Koan Studio is a multidisciplinary design practice crafting bespoke conceptual objects and spaces with Experience as the foundation of the work. Each interior, product, or conceptual object is designed to evoke the design philosophy of immersive and emotionally precise design. We combine engineering clarity with the intimacy of handmade craft, engaging materials in their most honest form. We believe what is seen may fade, but what is felt becomes memory. The architects at Koan create spaces and objects that resonate long after they are encountered.
Editor’s Note: Rooted in the beauty of handmade craft and honest materials, this studio reflects a deep respect for authenticity and detailing. Custom-designed furniture, crafted from solid teak wood with delicate rosewood inlays, brings warmth and character to the space. Lush greenery, effortless circulation, and a calm, villa-like atmosphere create an environment where work and deliberation coexist.
The Design Philosophy of This Gandhinagar home Was Simple – Immersive & Precise | Koan Studio
Koan Studio stands inside one of the oldest buildings in Gandhinagar’s Electronics Estate- an address that has quietly witnessed four decades of growth, ideas, and transformation. Long before it became a design studio, this was the first home of Aaj’s parents.
In those early years of their career, they lived in a compact single room that doubled as a kitchen, living, and dining area. Today, that very room forms the central lounge of Koan’s experience centre- a space that now holds conversations, prototypes, visitors, and a new design philosophy, yet still carries a memory of warmth.
For Aaj, this building was never just a workplace. As a child, he visited almost every day after school- deeply curious, always eager to help, learn, or make something with his hands. He grew up around technicians, learning quietly from them, watching the rhythms of the factory floor, absorbing the logic of tools, materials, and improvisation.
Those early lessons- about patience, precision, and human-centered thinking- would shape his future far more than he realised then. Educated at the Royal College of Art, London, Aaj’s design journey began with a fascination for movement and form-an interest that gradually evolved into a pursuit of stillness, balance, and proportion. At RCA, he developed a strong inclination toward yacht design-both interiors and exteriors-exploring how spaces can evoke emotion even in constant motion.
The approach to materials was guided by clarity and honesty. Koan kept materials true to what they are, not what they resemble. There is no attempt to mimic, decorate, or disguise. The walls remain minimal, simply painted. The variations in floor levels of the room reflect the building’s past without romanticising it.
The architects designed the bespoke-designed furniture from solid teak wood with rosewood inlays- a nod to craft traditions interpreted with contemporary restraint. Each piece is handmade, not for the sake of showcasing craft, but because Koan believes that true luxury is born from the time and intention invested in a piece. True luxury as a design philosophy cannot be held; it can only be felt in presence. It lies not in materials, but in the experience they create. And it is this experience-calming, grounding, and worth returning to that guides Koan’s design ethos.
Khushi designed the rugs that soften the spatial atmosphere, an interior and textiles curator at Koan, whose work layers the rooms with thoughtful patterns and palettes. Sculptural lamps, collectable one-off pieces, and quiet objects designed in-house complete the environment, though nothing feels ornamental. Instead, each piece contributes to an overarching sense of gentleness.
Perhaps the most unexpected luxury of Koan Studio is its relationship with nature. When you open the large bifold doors, peacocks often wander straight into the lounge- unbothered, relaxed, almost as if inspecting the day’s work.
Their presence feels like an approval, a reminder of continuity. Generations of these birds have grown up around this structure; they have seen it change from a small home, to a growing company, to an experience-driven design studio. Their comfort is a silent affirmation that the architecture belongs to its setting.
Visitors often mistake the studio for a bungalow. The design philosophy of openness, the greenery, the ease of circulation, and the villa-like calm make people pause. To ask, “Is this really an office?”. During the monsoon, when the foliage deepens and the light turns soft, the studio takes on an almost retreat-like quality.
The architects didn’t place Koan here; it grew here. The building has changed gently over the years. Koan carries those changes forward- turning memory into spatial clarity and lived experience into design.
The experience centre is designed to slow you down, to make you feel, to make you breathe. It is a space shaped by restraint, memory, and heritage. It has the quiet confidence that meaningful design comes not from spectacle, but from presence.
