A reference to contemporize the mid-century modern architecture was the short, clear brief that the client shared with us. The design intent and the course that our studio tries to unfold are coherent designs over the path of contemporary architecture. Simplistic, minimal design with a careful selection of sustainable materials and precise details with local craftsmanship is extremely central to our philosophy.
Editor’s Note: “Inspired by mid-century modern architecture, this social convergence center in Hyderabad unveils a design that is both simple and minimalist. Echoing the roots of culture, the center employs subtle, neutral materials and elements. The connection to nature through biophilic features evokes a sense of comfort and familiarity. This social center crafts a unique experience, fostering conversations and meetups in a serene and welcoming environment.” ~Simran Khare
The Brief was to Contemporize Mid-Century Modern Architecture | AKBAC™ Architecture
The space is designed to foster social interaction and enhance well-being in these unprecedented times. Our commitment to creating environments that resonate with our innate need for connection has never been stronger.
In this endeavour, we have embraced materials and textures that evoke a sense of comfort and familiarity. The use of organic elements and subdued tones has been a deliberate choice to facilitate a biophilic reconnection, reminding us of our roots in nature even as we navigate the complexities of modern life.
We believe that this space will not only serve as a place of gathering but also as a sanctuary that promotes a sense of belonging and kindness among its users. It is a testament to our belief that architecture can and should be an enabler of community and human flourishing.
Colours are inspired by nature, with replicated Kota stone floors and hand-painted walls in grey that display the tactility of the process. The skirting rises a few inches and blends into the walls, giving solidity to the space. The idea is to maintain cohesion throughout the built space for each type of space.
The design intent is always to achieve a calm and serene space. The design is characterised by simplicity, clean lines, and a monochromatic palette with a splash of bright colours used as an accent.
This social centre creates a highly enriching social experience by placing every element in an organised yet chaotic fashion, thereby creating an incredible meet-and-greet experience.
Texture- the organic and rugged textures deepen the character of the spaces and persuade the users to have a more tactile engagement with the surrounding elements.
Material character- the predominant use of wood and natural tones tends to re-establish a connection with the contextual environment.
Colour palette: the deliberate use of a palette with calming, mild hues highlights the brighter tones of the guests while the space itself merges into he background, allowing the people to become the central experiential element.
