The 750 square foot house in Mylapore apartment is a wonderful display of how compact homes can be attractive and spacious when used effectively. This interior renovation project aims to open up the existing floor plan while using every inch of available space. Every home, whether big, small, fancy, or simple, is a special place where memories are made. They are our shelters and sanctuaries.
The 750 Square Foot House in Mylapore Apartment is Wonderful | Uncut Design Lab
The clients had to downsize from a larger residence to this compact 750-square-foot flat. There was a need for multi-functional storage solutions that effortlessly connected the space. Altogether, supporting uninterrupted circulation became the need of the hour. Thus, almost every piece of furniture in this apartment has been custom-made to meet the client’s specific storage needs.
To achieve a refined, uncluttered appearance, we utilised space-saving measures such as mixed seating, pocket doors, an expandable dining table set, and flush-to-wall storage.
We designed each area to maximise storage while preserving floor space by removing obstructing walls, partitions, and openings to promote the free flow of spaces and improve natural ventilation, all while unifying them into a single coherent unit.
However, we managed the irregular beam arrangement and ceiling levels by varying false ceiling heights to ensure that they worked well with the proposed floor plan.
The living area extends into an open/parallel kitchen, where the pattern flooring tile stands out. Thus, we used a blend of conventional storage and customised tall cabinets to organise all supplies, appliances, and other items. We kept the colours and textures soft in tone to blend in with the colour of the walls and avoid overpowering the space.
The kitchen is bordered by the master bedroom on the right and another bedroom on the left. Both bedrooms, like the rest of the house, feature neutral tones with wood accents. We designed the left one to be multi-functional. Accordingly, when the pocket sliding door is open, the room becomes a spill-over zone from the living room.
We kept the interiors neutral in this close-packed dwelling, with pops of colour strategically placed to attract attention to certain areas. For instance, the main feature in the living room is teal herringbone tiles, which offset the overall warmth from the subdued elements in the space. We carefully structured the furniture, ensuring that even simple pieces like the oonjal (swing) in the living room became part of the seating arrangement.
Unlike a traditional bedroom, this has platform seating that transforms into a bed against one wall, and there is storage on the other side. Thus, it provides ample floor space for movement. Moving on to the master bedroom, the bed is placed in the centre of the room, facing the balcony, rather than against a wall not to restrict the expanse.
The focal point of the room is the custom-made low-height headboard with a teal fabric headrest. It encases a bookcase in the rear and a dresser on one side.
Finally, carefully arranged lighting, earthly soft furnishings, and vibrant accessories contribute to the overall effect and create an appealing, inviting atmosphere.
