Studio Space Designed For Creative Mind To Flourish | Innovations
Studio space keeping in mind their work philosophies and developing a work environment accordingly. The project is an office renovation of own design studio, for an interior designer and an artist.
The designers required a workspace so they took the available shop with an existing mezzanine floor, located in the densely congested area in the heart of the city, and converted it into a studio space keeping in mind their work philosophies and developing a work environment accordingly. The project is an office renovation of own design studio, for an interior designer and an artist.

A small lobby with a fish pond and natural planters leads to the main wooden door which opens in the waiting area of the studio. The requirement was minimal, to have 2 individual cabin areas, a waiting lobby, staff area, and ample storage. As the complete layout changed, the mezzanine floor was reconstructed and modified so as to achieve increased floor heights at both levels. The main highlight element of the whole space is the exterior facade which draws focus to the double-height Vietnamese Terracotta screen and a frangipani planter.
The main thought behind this was to give a vertical look to a typical shop and to maintain privacy. Due to limitations of area, clear glass partitions are used to give a seamless and larger look to the whole space. The composition of complete furniture has been created using linear lines. The waiting area further connects to the main cabin which consists of a long table with a cane mat finished top as a unique element.
The customized artwork on the front wall, which relates to the profession is also the focal point of this area. A sleek horizontal window is carved out on the north side wall to allow the natural light. Raw exposed concrete finish beside this window creates warmth in this cabin. Customized American ash wood lounger for visitors acts as additional seating in his area.
The Mezzanine level comprises of a staff area and an art studio. Minimalism was achieved through color and material pallet. Concrete finished laminated worktops and the black back-painted overhead store gives a clean look. Wellness in the staff area has been ensured with the introduction of planters and daylight harnessing. Adjoining the workstation is the art studio/cabin.
There are free floor space and minimum furniture in this cabin as per the artist’s requirement. The display wall for artwork is the predominant element in this area. Natural light filters through a large glass opening and the natural plantation outside. Every space in the office is embellished by its own customized artwork which plays a key role in the complete design.
The whole project was conceptualized with an idea of keeping all the office areas close to nature and creating warmth in the ambiance by using ambient lighting and natural and raw materials. Exploration of materials has been the key element in the designing of a complete project. Teakwood, micro-concrete, terracotta, black honed finished floor, metal sheets, perforated sheets and neutral colors are mainly used.
‘Innovation is the most essential ingredient in Design’. To stop the flow of innovative ideas is to arrest the thought process, itself. This design philosophy followed by the designers is clearly reflected in their own workspace and has helped them achieve their Zen.
