Some objects quietly outlive time. A brass vessel blackened by years of use, a copper utensil once placed carefully during festive rituals, a bronze plate passed down through generations—these are not merely functional artefacts, but silent carriers of memory. They hold traces of homes, traditions, conversations, and everyday rituals that slowly shape cultural identity across time. Smaran was conceived from this very understanding to experience design: that objects can preserve emotion long after moments have passed.

Designed as a concept-driven retail space for traditional metal ware, Smaran reimagines the experience of shopping as something immersive, reflective, and deeply rooted in cultural familiarity. The project moves beyond the conventional idea of product display to create an environment where brass, bronze, and copper artefacts are experienced as extensions of memory and ritual rather than isolated retail objects. The name itself—Smaran, meaning remembrance—became both the emotional anchor and conceptual framework of the project.

The client envisioned a space that would feel elevated yet familiar; contemporary in expression while remaining deeply connected to its cultural origins. The challenge was not simply to showcase handcrafted metal ware, but to create an atmosphere where visitors could emotionally reconnect with objects they had perhaps seen in their grandparents’ kitchens, festive gatherings, or places of worship. The design therefore sought to evoke nostalgia without becoming literal, allowing memory to emerge subtly through space, materiality, and experience.

Inspiration

The project draws inspiration from the Kansara community, historically associated with the craftsmanship of metal utensils and artefacts deeply embedded in Indian households. For generations, these objects have existed at the intersection of utility and tradition—woven seamlessly into rituals of cooking, dining, celebration, and devotion. Instead of replicating historical forms directly, the project interprets this heritage through abstraction and restraint, translating cultural references into a refined contemporary language.

At the center of the experience design narrative lies the idea of Suspended in Memory. The phrase emerged from viewing memory itself as something intangible—never entirely fixed, yet always present. This notion shaped the visual identity of the space, where objects appear lightly held within the environment rather than visually anchored by heavy display systems. The intention was to create a sense of stillness, allowing the artefacts to feel almost preserved in time.

Spread across a compact 500 sq. ft. linear footprint, the site posed significant spatial challenges. Its narrow proportions carried the risk of feeling visually compressed, particularly given the density and reflective quality of metal ware displays. Instead of treating this limitation as a constraint alone, the design transforms the linearity into a narrative journey—where movement through the store unfolds gradually, almost like walking through fragments of recollection.

Spatial Planning

The spatial planning follows a sequential approach, allowing the central aisle to become the primary spine of the experience. Along the periphery, the walls shift rhythmically between functional shelving and immersive experiential zones. Curated kitchen settings, dining compositions, and thematic installations contextualize the products within lived experiences, subtly reminding visitors of the environments these objects once naturally belonged to.

Shelving System

One of the defining elements of the project is the bespoke shelving system developed specifically for the space. Designed without visible vertical supports, the shelving creates uninterrupted visual continuity across the walls while maximizing display efficiency within the compact footprint. More importantly, it reinforces the project’s conceptual essence—the illusion of objects suspended lightly within space. The resulting visual lightness offsets the material heaviness of the metal ware, creating balance throughout the interior.

Linear beams with a warm finish extend across both parallel walls, introducing rhythm and continuity while visually elongating the narrow space. Their horizontal emphasis guides movement naturally through the store and ties the various display elements into a cohesive spatial language. Loose movable display units animate the central aisle, allowing flexibility in arrangement while maintaining openness and ease of circulation.

At the threshold, an intricately crafted jaali element creates a layered moment of arrival. Rather than immediately revealing the interior, it filters views into the space, allowing fragments of light, texture, and metallic reflections to emerge gradually. This transition became an important part of the experience—creating a subtle pause between the outside world and the immersive atmosphere within.

Materiality

Materiality throughout the project was approached with sensitivity and restraint. A warm, muted palette allows the natural richness of brass, bronze, and copper to remain visually dominant. Wood-finish surfaces introduce familiarity and warmth, balancing the reflective nature of the displayed artefacts without competing with them. The intention was never to overwhelm the space with material excess, but rather to create a quiet backdrop where craftsmanship and memory could take center stage.

Detailing

Detailing plays an equally important role in shaping the identity of Smaran. Lotus-inspired motifs integrated within shelving systems introduce subtle symbolic references without becoming decorative in excess. Stepwell-inspired display compositions create shifts in height, depth, and perspective, bringing variation into the otherwise linear volume. These interventions quietly reference traditional Indian architectural forms while contributing to the layered visual rhythm of the store.

Lighting

Lighting was treated not simply as illumination, but as an emotional device. Soft pools of warm light interact with the reflective surfaces of brass and copper, creating changing patterns of glow and shadow across the space. This carefully controlled experience design lends intimacy to the environment, allowing the store to feel contemplative rather than transactional.

Challenge

One of the most significant challenges throughout the design process was maintaining balance. There existed a delicate line between creating a culturally immersive experience and allowing the space to become overtly thematic. The design therefore avoids nostalgia as ornamentation. Instead, memory is embedded more subtly—through rhythm, materiality, spatial sequencing, and sensory atmosphere.

Equally challenging was ensuring that the compact footprint remained breathable despite the density of displayed products. Every intervention—from the elimination of bulky structural supports to the layered display strategy—was carefully calibrated to preserve openness and clarity. The result is a space that feels immersive without feeling crowded, intimate without feeling confined.

Emotional Significance

What ultimately distinguishes Smaran is its ability to transform everyday objects into artefacts of emotional significance. The project does not rely on spectacle or visual excess; instead, its strength lies in atmosphere, restraint, and storytelling. Through carefully orchestrated spatial experiences, it encourages visitors to slow down, observe, and reconnect with objects that may already exist within their own personal histories.

The bespoke shelving system remains one of the project’s most defining features—not only for its functional precision but for the way it captures the essence of the concept itself. The visual suspension of objects becomes symbolic of memory: preserved delicately between past and present.

Exploration Of Continuity

More than a retail environment, Smaran becomes an exploration of continuity. Exploration of how traditions quietly survive through objects used in everyday life. It demonstrates how thoughtful spatial design can evoke emotion without relying on literal representation. It creates an experience that feels timeless, immersive, and deeply human.

In the end, Smaran is not merely about displaying metal ware. It is about honouring the stories these objects carry. The rituals they once witnessed, and the memories they continue to hold long after time has passed.
