Tucked within the bustling landscape of Mumbai, ‘Muted Tones’ is a modest 2BHK apartment. It is designed for a young working couple and their child. Balancing modern contemporary aesthetics with a deep reverence for Indian textures, patterns, and materials, the home reflects an architectural sensibility that is both personal and timeless.

As one enters the home, the narrative unfolds through thoughtful material choices and muted tones. It begins with the main door, the shoe cabinet, and the credenza, all covered in teak wood and teak veneer. These elements set the tone for the spatial story ahead: warm, natural, and enduring.
The living area embraces indoor greens, inspired by the owners’ love and care for plants. Accentuating this connection with nature, bird and botanical wall decals sourced from ‘KalakaariHaath’ s animate the otherwise muted background. A customised egg-shaped tiled carpet anchors the space. It features a striking floor composition of bottle green and off-white tiles edged with a brass inlay. It emulates the visual effect of a soft rug.
This tactile intervention contrasts harmoniously with the textured main floor. A generously large sofa paired with two accent chairs defines the living lounge. A set of solid teak wood coffee and side tables with birch plywood legs and a brass patina top complements the space.
Teak veneer finishes the entertainment wall, which hosts a sleek TV unit with floating shelves and a tall open library. A matte black MS pipe framework extends to the ceiling, adding a functional and industrial edge.
Adjacent to the living area lies the dining space. It is centred around a bespoke terrazzo table top supported by four uniquely sized teak wood legs. A multifunctional crockery unit creatively composed of teak wood, birch ply, and fluted glass doors anchors the dining area. A terrazzo ledge echoes the table’s material palette, lending continuity and cohesion in relation with the dining table.
The compact kitchen is a showcase of efficient layout and material play. The compact kitchen is a show of efficient layout and material interplay. The lower cabinet is finished in a leaf-green laminate, while the upper cabinet is finished in a light wood tone. It maintains a light tone ambiance. The countertop, in green-chip terrazzo over a white base, seamlessly complements the soft sage kit-kat backsplash tile, a refined monochrome palette layered with texture.
The master bedroom is calm and bridges modern with cultural homage. A two-tone flooring layout, off-white tiles across the main area and mushroom grey around the bed, is subtly divided by a brass pati detail, giving spatial definition without visual weight.
All furniture elements, i.e, the bed, side tables, dresser, and cupboards, are wrapped in natural matte teak veneer and finished with elegant brass handles on the wardrobes. The bed’s upholstered headboard showcases vertical-stitching details in muted shades of peach, olive, and grey. Floral-printed butta fabric curtains on a beige background bring in soft, nostalgic charm. On the wall behind the bed, a bespoke half-round moulding pati in same colour as the wall background runs straight to the ceiling, punctuated with ‘KalakaariHaath’s matte gold finished metallic elephant stickers, an artistic nod to Indian symbolism, tastefully layered into the contemporary bedroom.
In the master bathroom, a deliberate horizontal split in materials enhances visual clarity. The lower half, below the window sill, is cladded in a dark grey terrazzo tile, while the upper portion is finished with teak wood-look tiles. This textural shift maintains the overall warm palette while defining zones within the compact layout.
Designed with both creativity and activity in mind, the children’s bedroom features chevron-patterned wooden flooring that visually elongates the space. The cabinetry and furniture are a playful mix of birch plywood and deep cobalt blue PU-finished shutters, adding vibrancy without visual chaos.
A custom-made bunk-bed-sofa hybrid, toddler-friendly curved chairs, and a functional study desk with a big bulletin board and a few floating shelves complete the space. As a whimsical addition, the room features wall and ceiling-mounted monkey bars near the window, creating a mini jungle gym for the child to climb and swing, marrying design with movement.
The common washroom adopts a muted materiality, featuring grey terrazzo tiles on both the floor and walls. A fluted glass partition delineates the shower area, while matte black fixtures and fittings provide stark yet sophisticated contrast, enhancing the overall minimal appeal.
‘Muted Tones’ is more than just a home, it’s an exploration of balance. The residence thoughtfully integrates contemporary design strategies with rooted Indian elements, creating a narrative that is personal, tactile, and emotionally resonant. Subtle contrasts, layered materials, and handcrafted details make the space feel intentional and lived-in, offering a quiet sophistication that speaks volumes.
