The Design Story is an Ahmedabad-based design studio who has brought a striking red house design in the city for a a family of three. Having stayed in a joint family in the past, the client wanted a minimal approach to the house along with maximum space utilization.
Editor’s Note: The evidently stand-out element of the volumetric red cuboid frames the entire residence together. It emerges as an eye candy among a sea of white-bleached houses. The indoors are an oasis of simplicity with the dining area as the hero design element. The stairwell is also crafted cleverly while the space perceives the ideal setting of a home. ~ Nishal Sevak

The client with a family of three and being a part of a big joint family wanted a minimal approach toaesthetics and maximum utilization of space. A well-ventilated and maximum use of natural light wasthe key components they wanted us to take in to consideration while designing the residence. Used to alot of occasional gatherings and being social they also wanted multifunctional spaces. A simple and sophisticated interior was the demand.
The key design components were from the brief of climatology and inclined profile of the site. Interestingly, the inclinations of the sides defined the form of the building. The site constraints become the strength of the aesthetics of the design. A minimal approach to functions and creating a double height dining space, well-connected to the lawn creates a nature interactive highlight of the project.
This brings a play of a double glass cube emerging out from the built mass along with a massive slit in the staircase keeping the house well lighted throughout the day. A small reading corner with a mini library creates a cozy corner using up the dead space beneath the staircase.
Massive windows in every room create an airy cross ventilation helps in achieving the design brief. A louvered element adds up to the aesthetics of the residence and also provides a visual screening from the approach to road to the upper floor passages and rooms. A second family room is a multipurpose room that’s acts as a family room along with a second TV room as well as a teaching room, the client being a professor who occasionally indulges in having private tutoring. The terrace extensions or chajjas have a painting of Piet Mondrian in china mosaic pattern to add a bit of quirk to the aesthetics.
The interior design approach was based on the concept of minimalism. A bit of color splash throughpaintings, curtains and also the tapestry adds life to the neutral flooring and wall ambience. A quirkybreakfast table enhances the visuals of the overall lower floor connecting the kitchen dining and livingroom. Every door detail has a play of level completing the visual aesthetics and merging language of thedesign concept. From light fixtures to bed details have been intrigue designed as per the nature andrequirement of the client.
The children bedroom has storage as well book shelf included in the bed design. A study unit cum dressing, that’s wooden framed and play of mass lightness the bulky room and massive storage requirement. The master bedroom is a minimal design with an all in one unit that actsas a tv unit, dressing and study table. Being a wood fan the client wanted maximum use of wood andneutrals which we have achieved along with colors pops in different rooms .wood with Blue and yellowcolors in varied forms brings life to the whole residence.
A very minimal entrance that blends in with the plating and lawn interacts with the dining along with acentral focus planting that becomes the focus element with peripheral planting creates a green visualfrom each space and also keeps the house landscape interactive.
A simple homely planting palette using kitchen essentials along with locally favorite plants brings a lot of peacocks and birds as regular guests of the residence.
