The ethos of this project is an ode to materiality and Indian crafts. The design elements within the space, though subtle, reflect the enduring values and origins of the store, capturing the essence of a traditional Indian interior. The “robust architectural language” suggests a strong, cohesive design that underpins the environment, creating a sense of continuity and heritage. These elements are not just decorative but serve as symbolic reminders of the store’s foundation and timeless goals.
Editor’s Note: “Celebrating the intimacy of Indian craft, Dhaagasutra is a confluence of carved wood, cane, and curated culture. Transcending decor and dragging heritage into structure and experience, the design invites not just to shop, but to feel. Moreover, this store is a bridge between what we recall and what we wear.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
A Story of Continuity and Craft Comes Alive in a Traditional Indian Interior | Kaushal Tatiya Architects
The entry threshold has been a reflection of artfully crafted silhouettes of traditional elements. The space is an apparel store celebrating Indian Crafts and tradition, has been designed to highlight the principles that are woven into the traditional pages of Timber architecture with their grand yet ornate structures, with beautiful wooden pillars, intricate carvings, and expansive spaces. These elements draw deeply from the cultural richness of color, texture, and tactility. Inspired by this, the design creates a seamless transition from space to form to the very pieces on display.
The design incorporates an earthy mud texture and pairs it with the sharp conformations of the stepped display, which are replicated throughout. Soft texture of fabrics, hard faces of wooden posts, and the mediatory textures of cane bring a visual layering to the eyes.
Intricately crafted wooden columns enrich the display racks, reception table, and mirrors. The design focuses on the finest details, with every niche and groove enhancing the authenticity of the inherited culture.
Carved wooden motifs with intricate decorative design, created by skilled artisans using traditional tools and techniques. The motifs display fabric pieces, reflecting the idea of wooden ‘Khunti’ used in Wadas.
Every niche and groove on the curved wooden station highlights the finest details, actively enhancing the authenticity of the culture it inherits. A red room designed especially for trials and in-depth consultations sets off the traditional theme with a queer touch.
Layering of central arena imparts discussion spaces with the backdrop of fabrics . An island mirror made out of timber paved the way for trials .
These elements draw directly from the cultural richness of the context, expressed through color, texture, and tactility. Inspired by this, the design actively creates a seamless transition from space to form to the very pieces on display.
Minuscule detailing on the reception console offsets the Brass Pots elevated on timber columns defying the material ethos of the store and its Origins.
