Saanjh is a contemporary residence that draws from Punjabi heritage while responding to the needs of modern family living. Rather than directly replicating traditional architecture, the design reinterprets familiar regional materials, crafts, and spatial qualities to create a home that feels rooted yet relevant. Punjabi heritage finds expression through handcrafted details, local materials, and vernacular elements, thoughtfully adapted within a clean contemporary framework.
The project balances openness with warmth, allowing natural light, texture, and craftsmanship to shape the interiors. Brick, timber, cane, stained glass, and handcrafted finishes create a cohesive material palette that connects the spaces while giving each room its own character. Every intervention reflects the homeowners’ connection to Punjabi culture, while prioritising functionality, longevity, and meaningful everyday living.

The design team redesigned the foyer to create a brighter and more functional entrance. Full-height neutral cabinetry replaces the existing storage, providing a cleaner look with increased concealed storage. A built-in seating niche adds everyday functionality, while bespoke stained-glass windows bring natural light and subtle colour into the space. Together, these elements establish the material palette and handcrafted character that continues throughout the home.
The design brief wanted the living and dining areas to encourage interaction and maintain visual continuity. Phulkari-inspired artwork introduces colour and references Punjab’s textile heritage without overwhelming the contemporary interiors. A jharokha-inspired opening creates visual connectivity between adjoining spaces, adding depth while preserving openness. Natural materials and handcrafted details soften the clean architectural lines, resulting in spaces that are both functional and inviting.
The design team treated the TV wall as an architectural intervention rather than a standalone furniture element. They reinterpreted the traditional exposed brick wall through fluid, organic curves that soften the rigidity of masonry and create a sculptural focal point.
Brick tiles retain the material authenticity, while cane shutters introduce warmth, texture and natural ventilation. The interplay of brick, cane and timber creates a contemporary interpretation of vernacular materials, balancing craftsmanship with modern design.
The kitchen was redesigned to improve openness, daylight and usability. Existing barriers were removed to create better visual connectivity with adjacent spaces, making the kitchen a more integrated part of family life. Sage green cabinetry, warm timber accents and vintage-inspired lighting establish a timeless material palette. Stained-glass windows provide privacy while introducing filtered natural light into the space.
The guest bedroom demonstrates the project’s approach towards adaptive reuse. Instead of replacing the existing wardrobes, they were redesigned and integrated into the new interior scheme. Patterned wallpaper and lighter finishes visually soften the storage, reducing its perceived bulk while minimizing material waste. The intervention preserved functional elements while significantly improving the overall spatial quality. A dedicated creative corner for the younger daughter extended from guest bedroom making the space below staircase playful enough.
The kids’ bedroom was redesigned by reworking the existing window seating and storage into a cleaner and more functional layout. A soft palette of pastel pink and mint green creates a calm and playful atmosphere. Arched details and fluted panels add character, while the integrated window seat and concealed storage maximize space without adding clutter. The design creates a bright, flexible room that can grow with the child.
The master bedroom combines warm natural materials with bold visual accents. Wooden rafters highlight the sloping roof geometry, adding depth and character to the space. A cobalt blue wallpaper forms the primary focal point, balanced by cane wardrobe shutters that visually lighten the storage units. Handcrafted stained-glass bifold doors connect the bedroom to the balcony while allowing natural light to enrich the interiors throughout the day.
The balcony was designed as an extension of the living spaces. Cement jaalis embedded with coloured glass blocks filter daylight and create dynamic light patterns across the flooring and walls. A traditional wooden swing anchors the space, offering a comfortable seating area while reinforcing the home’s regional identity. The combination of natural ventilation, filtered light and handcrafted materials creates a comfortable outdoor environment throughout the day.
The terrace serves as the primary social space of the residence and functions as the heart of the home. Designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Punjabi courtyard, it accommodates family gatherings, celebrations and everyday outdoor activities.
The space combines rustic texture walls, bamboo roofing, handcrafted niches, folk-inspired artwork and built-in seating to create a cohesive outdoor environment. A discarded bathtub was adaptively reused as a lotus mosaic pond, transforming an unused object into a distinctive landscape feature while reducing construction waste.
Fortress-like parapets provide privacy, while traditional elements such as the chulha and handcrafted murals reinforce the cultural narrative without compromising functionality. The terrace demonstrates how outdoor spaces can become active living environments rather than secondary recreational areas.
