I (Iram Boxwala, lead architect) first met with the Aggarwal’s, our clients, at the start of 2020 to discuss the design for their family office. They wanted a classical office design with modern elements the use of molding and fluting. Additionally, they wanted all their furniture made in house so we designed and created each piece with the clients and then found the perfect accessories to match the designs such as moldings, decorative lighting, showpieces, finish for the chairs, plants etc. Sadly, due to COVID, our design process was stalled for 2 years and this gave us time to rework (and rework again!) our designs to achieve the finished look.

Upon visiting the site initially, the first thing that caught my eye were the gigantic reinforced columns in the middle of all the spaces. I immediately knew I had to plan my design to either utilize these columns in a better manner or completely conceal them wherever I could. I went with the latter so the layout and cabin segregation was planned based on the columns. Due to the sloping nature of the reinforcements at the ceiling level of each column, we the office.
Reception : We decided on a minimal design complimented by the use of Travertine marble and dark walnut veneer for the reception table.
Director’s Cabin (Aashish’s Cabin) : Inspiration for this space was drawn from antique royal English home offices. The deep green leather stands out against the dark walnut veneer to achieve this look. We used a brushed bronze hanging light which ties the design together.
Directors Lounge : Portraits of buildings built by famous Indian Architects are used as art on the walls for the lounge. Minimal furniture with a heavy rug and colourful side table décor are the elements that bring life to this space.
Pantry : We decided to use earthy tones to give this space a comfortable, informal meeting room-cum pantry feel. 3D stone tiles for the backsplash and the stone countertop add in a luxury touch. The rustic black, cane hanging light compliments the simple wooden table and black chairs.
Other Cabins : A clean, white, classical look was decided for the other three cabins. Molding on the base of the customized tables and the back of the walls add a feminine touch.
The décor on the shelves adds a personalized touch as it can be arranged based on the users needs.
Open Office Space : We decided to design a modern, open office space to allow for flexibility and co-working. Hanging lights were also added for ample lighting. Classical details such as molding on the tables and for the frames were followed keeping the theme of the office uniform.
Passage : A highlight space in the entire office would have to be the passage due to the long track light used. It effortlessly elongates the space as you walk through it and provides ample lighting to this in-between space.
Another major design challenge was that this project relied heavily on Vastu so there were constraints in placements of furniture and specific positions for each family member occupying the cabins. We went through multiple layouts and Vastu compliant changes to finally arrive at the desired layout.
