A journey of creating a home, a meditative sanctum quite often begins with several ideas, inspirations, and imaginations. It’s surprising that Catenary House discreetly paves a certain direction for movement in the design language that cloaks the entire residence. Orderly yet not monotonous, playful yet systematically asymmetrical narrates each resident’s daily lives and their interaction with artistic treatments and textures. This personalized luxury graciously builds a collective narrative yet is individualistic in its own ways. ~Yamini Vaswani (Editor)

Experimenting with design touches across the spectrum, J+AM Storey crafts this Gurugram apartment to be a celebration of textures, tones and hues, all while bringing together a restrained minimalist style and playful curves which the home draws its name from. Soft curves surrounded by minimal musings & artistic impressions.
The word ‘Catenary’ translates to the curve made by a flexible cord, suspended freely between two fixed points. Hence, the name sets the tone of this house which is surrounded by soft curves from ceiling to walls and artefacts at every corner of the house.
The space crafts a visual delight and manifest’s-with a curvilinear design. The house symbolises a pure style of opulence right at the entrance. The bold black striped flooring on white marble welcomes at the entry and leads to the rest of the house. The abstract figure of a lady in brass and mirror in the dining area and the composition of artwork on the living room wall are the showstoppers of the Catenary house.
From stone to customized tiles and laminated wood we have explored variety in flooring. Combining texture mirror, brass and black mirror we have curated a lady figure at the entrance. Mandir in corean and brass while different wall finishes such as stained veneer panelling, mouldings, wallpaper and customised artwork in drawing can be seen as design elements.
Following the design thread of the tropics, the wallpaper in the master bedroom blends harmoniously with the nature-inspired theme. While minimalism binds the space, orchestrating an unusual and artistic character in the space. A nuanced creation of elements all works together with seamless cohesion. There is an air of subdued elegance in the house. It celebrates a relationship between whites and shades of grey keeping the material palette neutral and minimal. Sunlight sweeps every corner filtering an ambient glow and highlighting textural nuances.
The flooring tile in the kid’s bedroom was customised along with the spiral shelves to showcase their toys.
The choice of light-colored upholstery and furniture in the house alters the perception of the space. Driven by creativity in design, every zone features a characteristic hue, affording an instant visual identity. Sleek silhouettes of pendant lights with metallic finishes grace the design, concocting a hint of contemporary luxury. A smattering of curious and personal artifacts around the house adds a dash of aesthetics. Peppered with playful interiors and precisions, the house provides an overall unbound artistic experience.
We end up creating loads of memories till the complete project execution. But there was an instance when we had to put together quite a number of scattered CNC cut pieces of a customised tv cabinet placed in the living room and everyone on the site from labour to client to us, started arranging the pieces like a jig saw puzzle. once it was complete after the combined efforts and overall joyous experience. And this will remain our favourite story to be cherished lifetime.
The client was a well-travelled enthusiastic duo and was fascinated by European-style architecture. Their brief was crisp and wanted a minimal, unique yet contemporary artistic house in plays of whites and neutral pallet.
