Ubiquitously Layered in Shades of Umber for High-End Residential Reception Lobby Design | Fernway Interiors

We decided to follow the principles of Wabi Sabi while designing the reception and have a simple yet impactful design. The use of natural materials and earthy color tones was the guiding factor for the design elements.
The 30 feet high reception lobby wall is cladded with birch ply, layered one on top of the other creating few pockets for a vertical garden. It was inspired by floating islands. Since plywood comes in standard sizes of 8 feet by 4 feet, it was a challenge to lay down the ply and create the curves required for the islands that had to be spread over the height of 30 feet.
Melamine polish was done directly over the birch ply to bring out the veins. The last layer had the darkest polish and as the layers progressed, the polish was made to become lighter.
This was done to create the illusion of land levels in the water, the deepest layer being the darkest and the top most layer above the water having the vegetation.
The reception desk is cladded with a natural stone that’s set against a dark brown fluted background. Potted plants have been added all around to decorate the reception.
The huge cane light fixtures were made by the local artisans and brought in from Manipur. None of the pieces are a copy of another since it’s made by weaving the cane by hand. Each light fixture is about 3 feet high and has been hung at different heights.
