  • Unison of Casual Ethnic with a Bold Palette | Green Squares Design Studio

The residence is a manifestation of vernacular methods in a contemporary manner. The material palette is a combination of the subtle, ethnic and earthy beige of cane and the strong and impactful wooden brown highlighted with the sheen of brass. They are all bound together with the neutral grey. The entire house is sown together in this palette with curves as a highlighted geometry. Arcs, arches, circles tie the house in a singular theme and allow seamless transition from one space to another.

The entrance door is the first encounter with this theme. The well-crafted wooden jali introduces the curves. It is balanced out with the granite squares in grey. The door opens up to a feature wall in the living room.

The living room wall is designed as an identity to the house. With a beige travertine background and a brass plated rods frame, supported by wooden strips, it gives one a glimpse of the warmth the house generates. The tv panel continues the brass plated frame of the main feature, but with a contrasting black marble finish laminate as a background. This binds the entire space in unison. These panelled walls are further highlighted with a subtle grey sofa.

Also, the sofa designed for the space is a minimal piece of furniture allowing the paneled walls to take the center stage. The sofa showcases a roped armrest design as an important element. The center table with brass legs continues the use of the material palette. Another key feature of this room are the wooden side tables designed as an extension of the theme – circular geometry and colors to contrast the subtle color scheme.

The dining room is a crucial space in this residence. The space is where the family shall meet, eat and converse. This brief led to its design as not just a functional space but as the core of the house. The Italian marble round dining table with a round wooden ceiling and a circular suspended light fixture together emphasise its value as the core space.

The transition from living to dining houses the pooja space and the entry to the master bedroom. The door to the master bedroom is camouflaged in the feature wall panelling to maintain its symmetry.

The master bedroom welcomes one with the play of crimson and grey. The use of crimson helps celebrate the evening sun which floods the room. Another feature to appreciate the flooding of light is the low Indian sitting adjacent to the window.

The bed has a symmetric back panel. The panel showcases the coming together of the colour scheme of the room and also the theme of the house with the addition of cane panels and the brass coloured artefact in the centre.

It is an ideal space to look over at the landscape area of the apartment scheme. The seat continues to form the study table tucked along its line and this unit acts as a clear demarcation of these spaces from the sleeping space.

The dining leads to two more bedrooms- daughter’s and guest’s. The daughter’s room with a window in the east wall brings in the morning sun. This light is complemented with a deep purple upholstered headboard with a band of bronze mirrors lining its edge. This semi-circular headboard is matched with a similar mirror on the wardrobe doors. The shades of purple are a reflection of her personality and help celebrate it through her space.

The guest bedroom also accessed from the dining room has an interesting play of elements. The east wall window lets in light to a camel yellow fluted wall behind the bed. The golden glow emitted by it is supported by a black upholstered headboard. To help perceive the room as a bigger space, the wardrobe is designed to float with a bronze mirrored lower cabinet and a deep niche created at the bed level. The floor appears to be doubled reducing the visual weight in the room.
