Gulati Niwas : An Apartment Interior Design Transforming Space With Charm And Tranquil | Kaizaad Mehta Architects

The open floorplan concept for this residence apartment interior in Andheri was a no-brainer, allowing the design theme to embrace the different rooms with their individual functions into a transformed space of charm and tranquil. Panelled glass partitions that replace two chunks of solid wall, act as openable divisions thereby bringing in light from the full-length windows to the living room, guest room and the kitchen. The fluid layout with array of indoor plants also keeps it light and open so the spaces appears larger and breathe as one.

Gulati Niwas : An Apartment Interior Design Transforming Space With Charm And Tranquil | Kaizaad Mehta Architects

The entrance passage of this 1200 SQ FT. residence sets the tone for a subtle and minimal approach to the living room. A white panelled stretch of wall that extends straight into the heart of the flat is flaunted by an antique hanging light fixture and a breezy shoreline artwork on canvas. A teak wood shelf below a handcrafted round jute frame mirror creates a decorative ensemble with the kitchen entrance and an overlooking breakfast counter.

For the living room to accentuate the open floor plan concept and redeem the considerably low height of the flat, shades of white, greys and browns are used extensively with the occasional blue tone to mark an accent or feature wall.  The dinning area which is a more “eggs and bacon” than “seven course meal” is an amalgamation of a modern age minimal concept. The breakfast counter finished with a white lacquered glass top and bound with rose gold edges overlooks into the kitchen through a matt black panelled vertical sliding window. The fluted base of the counter synchronises with the teak wood legs of the dining table which protrude in steps like strands of DNA and flaunts a creamy onyx top.

The prayer cabinet and bedroom doors are styled with an egg shelled hue and inlays of rose metal, finished with matt black fittings.  A teal sofa corresponds with a neat tv console that matches the same colour and is highlighted by wall sconces and a fluted wooden frame along with a printed accent chair and an abundance of indoor plants. A sliding glass partition with matt black aluminium panels creates the backdrop for the living area and visually disconnects the space from the guest room by means of a curtain system behind. Once opened, the guest room which houses a pull-down bed and a study corner, merges with the living area to create a much bigger area for gatherings and celebrations. The guest room also houses a cane swing which is nestled under the fluted wooden paneling that extends from the living area like a single frame for the entire central space.

A parallel kitchen space with limited natural ventilation is kept minimal by using a universal tone over the floor and dado. A stone grey – natural wood finish on the cabinets keeps the kitchen area fresh and lively. A visual connect to the dining area via the paneled glass window flags an adjacent door with a similar pattern. These black paneled frames bind the area together and form the front line of the design elements for the central space.

The parent’s bedroom maintains the existing wooden flooring and presents an uncluttered relaxing space. A hue of pastel pink splashes over the main wall above the grey bed-back. Sconces and oval shaped mirrors flagged on either side blend with design palate seamlessly.  A touch of grey on the white panelled doors of the wardrobe compliments the bed-back and a soft bench parallel to the bed. Opposite, a grey void breaks through the white panelled storage with wood finished knobs that reflect the flooring.

The client’s bedroom dons a Scandinavian-minimal approach with a more earthy vibe. A dark shade of grey and egg shelled textured wall opposite bed sets the stage for a rattan webbed TV console and bed side tables dressed in a veneered finish. The bed back adopts a more minimal trend by means of suspended cushions from a horizontal metal bar. Louvered wardrobe shutters with matt black handles also add to the design language of the textured Tv wall.

Basic Insights of the project

1.  Please share with us challenges faced by you during the process of design ideation till execution of the project. We are sure there might be many and you would have overcome it successfully.

Ensuring that the project stays on schedule while keeping everybody involved in the project and the people living in the building, safe from covid. Procuring and ensuring the materials reach the site on time, while following the protocols also quite challenging.

2. What is that one design element in the entire space which has your heart.

While special attention was given to each and every nook, the way the glass partition and the glass door slides open in their respective corners without the hinderance of a corner post, makes it space uncluttered and barrier free. The perfect blend of white painted MDF flutes below the breakfast counter culminate on the skirting cladded with L-type rose gold metal strip, looks wonderful. The TV unit, in the living room, with teal flutes and rose gold metal strip, topped with white lacquered glass enhances the white panelled walls.

3. Concept

The entrance unlocks a white paneled stretch of wall that extends straight into the heart of the flat which houses the prayer cabinet and client’s bedroom door. To the right of the entrance is a parallel kitchen space with limited natural ventilation. A visual connect to the dining area via the paneled glass window flags an adjacent door. These black paneled frames bind the area together and form the front line of the design elements for the central space.

A sliding glass partition creates the backdrop for the living area and visually disconnects the space from the guest room. Once opened, the guest room which houses a pull-down bed and a study corner, merges with the living area to create a much bigger area for gatherings and celebrations. The fluted wooden paneling that extends from the living area to the guest room like a single frame for the entire central space.

The client’s bedroom door is adjoining the prayer cabinet. The tv unit is opposite to the bedroom door and the wardrobes flank the tv unit from both sides. The split wardrobes are configured to allow movement. The bed’s headboard, adjoining the bedroom door, visually draws attention to the full height dressing mirror which is backlit. The full height window is enhanced by a cushioned bench overlooking the city view.

As you open the door of the parent’s bedroom, you will find the side of the wardrobes. We didn’t want to waste the space with non-functional dead panel thus, a door was provided to the side. Adjoining the door is a bench with a semi-circular shape to facilitate injury free movement. Opposite to the door is the bed with similar chamfered edges. The headboard of the bed is flanked by two capsule shaped mirrors which have lights running on the periphery. The duct area has been repurposed to be used as a closet, without disturbing the existed plumbing.

4. Design Style which is followed by the project

The intention was to create an elegant and spacious design, so we went with mid-century modern aesthetics with a dash of luxury. We wanted the apartment to feel bigger and brighter hence, use of white is prevalent with spattering of colour from accent walls and other furniture. Strip lighting was preferred for its better dispersion of light over conventional lights and few hanging lights owing to the low ceiling height.

5. If the project is influenced highly by the context of the site, please share with us the insight for that.

The site was a warm shell 3bhk flat on the 29th floor of Adani Western heights, with sweeping views of the city. The building has glass façades at intervals, so the living room and bedrooms get floor to ceiling windows which are partially openable.
