The homeowner, a former HDFC Bank manager in his early sixties, made an unconventional decision. At a stage when many continue working or plan their retirement cautiously, he chose to retire early—not because he had to, but because he wanted to. For him, time had become life’s greatest luxury. He wished to exchange deadlines for experiences, meetings for meaningful moments, and routine for the freedom to explore passions that had quietly waited in the background for decades. His outlook on life immediately became the foundation of the design process.

Energetic, curious, adventurous, and remarkably youthful in his thinking, he approached every design discussion with enthusiasm. He never wanted a stereotypical retirement home with muted palettes and conventional layouts. Instead, he envisioned a home that could evolve with him, embrace his optimism, celebrate colour, welcome conversations, and balance calm with everyday excitement.

Yet, the project was never solely about him. One of the most touching aspects of this high-rise home was his unwavering commitment to his ninety-year-old mother. While creating a space for his own new chapter, he also wanted her to experience comfort, dignity, and joy every day. The apartment therefore became an intergenerational high-rise home that thoughtfully balances the needs of two generations without compromising either identity.

Smart High-Rise Living

The high-rise apartment also presented a familiar urban challenge. Its compact size and modest budget demanded thoughtful planning rather than extravagant interventions. Every square foot had to justify its existence, every piece of furniture needed to serve a purpose, and every circulation path required careful consideration, especially for an elderly resident. Rather than treating these constraints as limitations, the design team used them to create a more intelligent and purposeful high-rise home.
