HOUSE WITHIN explores the private residence of an architect couple on a trapezoidal urban plot. The home deliberately turns away from the noise and immediacy of the street. Instead, it unfolds inward towards light, landscape, and stillness.
Defined by a restrained monolithic edge and protective exterior walls, the architecture reveals little from the outside. Instead, it gradually opens into a layered internal world shaped by gardens and filtered light. Framed views connect the home with the neighbouring park.
Conceived as an introspective urban sanctuary, the house is discovered from the inside out.
An Architect’s Own Home in Bangalore Turns Inward To Find Light, Landscape And Stillness | 3fold Design
Designing architect’s own home became an opportunity for reflection as much as construction. As architects, there is often an inherent temptation to infuse complexity — to over-articulate spaces, formal gestures, and material expressions in an attempt to justify creativity or value.
Confronted with the rare opportunity to design for ourselves, we began questioning these instincts: where should architecture speak, and where should it remain silent? Where is creativity meaningful, and where is restraint more powerful? This line of thinking was further reinforced during a solo journey through Japan to study the works of master architects whose buildings are rooted in restraint, atmosphere, and precision rather than excess.
The architect’s house process thereafter became less about invention for its own sake and more about distilling the essentials of living. In stripping away the frivolous, the project became an exercise in clarity — responding honestly to the site, climate, and rhythms of everyday life. In many ways, the house has bettered us as architects.
At the heart of the architect’s own house lies a lush internal garden that becomes both the emotional and spatial anchor of the home. Every major room is oriented toward this green core, allowing the boundaries between architecture and landscape to dissolve. Spaces spill into courts, verandas, and shaded transitional pathways where light, breeze, vegetation, and shadow become active architectural elements.
The inward-looking planning strategy creates a profound sense of privacy while ensuring that the house remains deeply connected to nature and the changing atmosphere of the day.
The architecture embraces dualities in the architect’s own home — solidity and openness, enclosure and transparency, silence and vitality. Heavy, grounded volumes are softened by pockets of landscape and carefully framed openings that choreograph moments of revelation. Minimal material palettes, textured slate stone walls, deep overhangs, and restrained detailing create an atmosphere of calm and permanence rooted in a contemporary interpretation of tropical modernism.
HOUSE WITHIN ultimately reflects a belief that luxury today lies not in excess, but in retreat in the ability to create moments of pause, intimacy, and connection within the density of the city. It is a home that protects, conceals, and slowly reveals itself; an architecture shaped less by spectacle and more by the experience of inhabitation.
