In the dense urban fabric of Surat, a 1027 sq. ft. apartment in Adajan, offers a refreshing design narrative. Crafted by Four Corners Architects in collaboration with Studio Inch Tape, the Sodawala’s residence stands strong as a masterclass in creative freedom, material authenticity, and spatial flow. Completed within a six-month timeline, the project by Ar. Faiyaz Mansuri and interior designer Manasvi Davawala, is a testament to what happens when a client swaps strict checklists for unwavering trust in the designer’s capabilities.

Brief

Lacking the usual mood boards, the initial conversations with the client didn’t limit the designer’s vision. The homeowners wanted a simple, contemporary space that could unify two small apartments into one. They had no preconceived notions about the material palette of the design elements and provided the team with complete creative autonomy.

Escalating a fluid design process, the client’s faith in the team became the foundation on which the organic material interventions and structural considerations thrived. The spatial journey commences at the entrance foyer housing a custom nameplate panel flanking a sleek, dark-glazed security door. A deeply veined, book-matched stone panel sets the tone right for the design of the spaces on the other side of the entrance door.

Layout

A dialogue between raw textures and refinement gradually unfolds within the space. Upon entering, the layout expands into a cohesive zone celebrating the symbiosis of the foyer, living area, and dining space. The designers identified a structural hindrance early in the process. The builder-provided kitchen platform restricted the space needed for a comfortable setup. They refined the layout to expand the kitchen and merge it with the broader social space.

Living

The living room is defined by a massive, uninterrupted wall panel that runs throughout the length of the public zone. Starting from the entrance threshold to the balcony window, this continuous veneer and satin-smooth PU-painted surface serves as a visual spine, anchoring the living area’s low-slung bouclé sofa, olive green lounge chairs, and a striking freeform marble coffee table. Elements like fluted glass partitions and sculptural, matte-black totem elevate the ambiance by accommodating an interesting play of light and shadow throughout the day.

While effortless integration is supported in the public areas, the private spaces are restricted to the individual sensibilities of their users. The four bedrooms with four different narratives showcase distinctive minimalism and material nuance.

Master Suit

The master suite acts as an architectural digest for the entire house’s material language. Prioritizing tranquility and modernity, the room is designed to embrace minimalism by reducing the emphasis on heavy paneling. A grid-patterned upholstered wall panel results in a clean backdrop, meeting a vertically stepped, ribbed headboard extension.

The entire setup is uplifted by delicate floral embroidery details on the pillows and an earthy-toned throw. In the background, a warm timber door establishes tactile alignment, balancing understated luxury and a serenity.

Parent’s Room

While the parent’s room serves as a subtle reminder of softness in everyday life. The bed back being an artistic focal point, features a heavily figured, natural marble slab wrapped in a subtle, ribbed texture capturing light.

Grounding the composition, a custom upholstered headboard in a warm chocolate-brown fabric complements the sleek, cylindrical wall sconce that bestows a soft glow. A floating timber console and open metal shelves maintain an airy uncluttered footprint opposite the bed.

Daughter’s Room

The daughter’s private sanctuary maximizes its footprint through smart storage and whimsical details. A matte PU-painted wall features an intricate three-dimensional motif that accentuates the organic rhythm of the space.

The backdrop merges with a scalloped headboard upholstered in terracotta-rose fabric, seamlessly transitioning into a cantilevered desk. The concept of nature flows across the layout, complementing the room’s playful ambiance.

Son’s Bedroom

Leaning into a dynamic energy, the son’s bedroom utilizes the home’s signature palette of woodand PU-painted accents. Featuring a vertically grooved panel elevated by a striking black metal mural of a cricket pitch, the room basks in the youthful energy. A deep teal, geometric upholstered headboard and a warm wood door with an intricate micro-grid pattern follows a clean design alignment.

Effective coordination helped the team translate the 3D visualisations into physical reality. Four Corners Architects and Studio Inch Tape coordinated the process seamlessly. They managed everything from civil modifications to intricately finished carpentry. Their collaboration ensured a smooth transition from concept to execution. The handover process was devoid of the last-minute chaos that often tags along with the strict timelines. The timeframe allowed perfection in the making the vision come true from the veneer alignment and stucco textures to the seamless stone joineries. The outcome is a home that does not simply look designed but boasts of thoughtfulness through tactile elements anchored in subtle luxury.
