  • Ojas in Bangalore Uses Limewash Walls to Bring Heritage and Warmth into Modern Living | Innches Studio

Ojas began with a simple yet meaningful intention—to create a home that reflected the lives, memories, and aspirations of the family who would live in it. The homeowners, a young couple from Odisha, wanted more than a well-designed apartment in the city. They envisioned a space that would remain connected to their roots while supporting the rhythm of contemporary family life.

    Home

When asked what they wanted their home to feel like, their response became the foundation of the project:

“A reminder of our roots. A home that feels like art in itself. Warm and grounding in the middle of a busy city. Something our daughter can grow up in and still feel connected to where we come from.”

This vision informed every aspect of the design, shaping the home’s material palette, spatial experience, and cultural character.

    Art

A defining influence on the project was the lady of the house, an artist with a deep appreciation for traditional Indian art forms. Her love for Pattachitra, Ikat textiles, and handcrafted objects naturally found expression throughout the interiors. The design integrates these pieces into the home’s identity rather than using them as decorative accents. They create an environment where art and everyday life exist in harmony.

Across the home, carefully curated artworks create moments of discovery and storytelling. Each piece carries personal significance, connecting the family to memories, traditions, and cultural influences that have shaped their journey. Together, they transform the interiors into a living narrative rather than a collection of objects.

    Material Palette

The material palette was chosen with equal care, emphasizing authenticity, texture, and longevity. Kota flooring provides a timeless foundation that feels grounded and understated. Limewashed walls introduce softness and depth, allowing natural light to interact beautifully with the surfaces throughout the day. Brick cladding adds warmth and visual richness, while natural materials such as rattan and solid wood bring a tactile quality that enhances the overall experience of the space.

Several furniture pieces were sourced from Alankaram, whose commitment to craftsmanship aligned closely with the design philosophy of the project. Their handcrafted character complements the home’s emphasis on quality, material honesty, and enduring design.

    Challenges

One of the key challenges was incorporating the family’s strong cultural connection without creating interiors that felt overly thematic or traditional. The homeowners already owned several treasured artworks and artefacts, each carrying emotional and cultural value. The design approach focused on allowing these pieces to sit comfortably within a contemporary setting, ensuring that heritage was expressed through thoughtful details rather than overt symbolism.

    Ikat-INSPIRED

As a result, cultural references appear with subtlety and intention. A Konark Chakra-inspired temple acts as a spiritual focal point, acknowledging the family’s connection to Odisha while maintaining a refined architectural presence. Ikat-inspired detailing has been integrated into the skirting, introducing a layer of regional identity through craftsmanship rather than ornamentation. Teakwood borders frame the ceilings, adding warmth, definition, and a sense of timelessness to the interiors.

Among the most memorable spaces in the home is a dedicated corner featuring a Pattachitra artwork paired with an indoor swing. Designed as a place to pause, reflect, and spend quiet moments together, it embodies the essence of Ojas. It is a space where culture is experienced naturally within daily life rather than preserved at a distance.

More than an interior project, Ojas is a reflection of the family’s values, memories, and aspirations. It demonstrates how contemporary design can embrace cultural identity without relying on nostalgia or excess. Every material, artwork, and carefully crafted detail contributes to a home that feels personal, enduring, and deeply connected to its inhabitants.

Ojas stands as a celebration of thoughtful design—one that prioritizes meaning over trends and creates spaces that continue to resonate across generations. It is a home where heritage, craftsmanship, and modern living come together to create a lasting sense of belonging.
