  • Bengali Heritage Comes Alive In This Timeless Restaurant Design | Atelier Archipelago

6 Ballygunge Place as a client embodies the very soul of Bengali heritage, not merely as a restaurant, but as a living memory of cultural elegance. Since 2003, the brand’s ethos has been deeply rooted in Bengali heritage architecture, refined sophistication, and a timeless signature. The design of the restaurant in Sodepur transforms a dull, unwelcoming space into an immersive contemporary homage to Bengal’s cultural and culinary legacy.

Set within a hotel’s mezzanine floor and restricted by an 8-foot ceiling height – dipping to under 7 feet beneath existing beams, the site demanded considerable spatial negotiation. Three central columns disrupted circulation, compromised seating and visual coherence.

    Existing Elements

The existing central HVAC system added another layer of complexity; concealing it would compress the already limited volume, while exposing it risked interrupting the brand’s warm atmosphere. The client sought a space that honored the long-standing identity of the brand and Bengali heritage, yet felt relevant to a younger audience seeking a more modern expression of Bengali sensibility.

    Exposed Services

They grounded the response strategy in spatial clarity and cultural storytelling. The architects left the central zone with a bare ceiling. They allowed the HVAC to remain visible without dominating the environment. By avoiding direct lights in this area, the AC units recede into a soft, ambient background, which enables the space to feel taller and more spacious. Along the edge, lowered and gently curved ceilings with integrated coves cast a warm, enveloping glow, creating a rhythm between the open center and intimate edges.

    bengali heritage

This choreography extends to the flooring. A central band of black-and-white checkered tiles, reminiscent of floors in old Bengali houses, defines the circulation spine. Around it, black slate coloured tiles frame the space, forming a minimal contemporary border around a traditional core, echoing the brand’s identity.

    The Central Columns

To resolve the awkward central columns, the architects introduced a mesh partition of five metal arches, one accented in red, referencing khilan – a door of traditional bengali architecture. However, they didn’t interpret them with vernacular material but as a wireframe (juxtapositioning of old and new). Refurbished red-and-white furniture and petal-shaped pendant lights inspired by the saluk (water lily) flowers found in rural Bengal landscape to complete the palette.

    Materials

Materiality shapes and defines the interior’s emotion. Walls painted in beige evoke the tactile warmth of adobe homes across rural Bengal. Craft intervention appears on the farthest walls, clad in madur kathi, a GI-tagged reed mat traditionally woven in Medinipur, Bengal.

    bengali heritage

Specially commissioned for the project, the architects bonded mats over curved plywood panels and finished them within solid wooden beats, transforming everyday craft into elevated architecture while revering its makers.

    Paintings

CNC-cut artworks on walls reinterpret classical Bengali lino-cut paintings. While the bar’s burnt-clay looking ceramic tiles and the buffet’s louvred shutters echo domestic nostalgia. A vibrant illustration near the service station animates the space with the energy of a bustling Bengali marketplace.

The resulting interior is both rooted and renewed. It is a space where Bengal’s heritage is distilled, elevated, and experienced as a living, evolving identity. It is woven through light, craft, and material memory.
