The client, an NRI, had a very simple and clear design brief for the project: “the whole house should have a coming-back-home feeling.” Having spent long years in the UAE and visiting Kerala only during vacations, the client carried an immense love for Kerala’s culture and traditions—especially the famous festival Thrissur Pooram.
The Design Brief By This NRI Client For Their Home Was Simple & Clear | Urbane ivy
Inspired by this affection for tradition and its uniqueness, the design brief evolved as a reflection of Kerala’s culture and indigenous architecture. They rooted it in earthiness, and it blends seamlessly with the natural topography.
This 3BHK residence is organised around an internal courtyard. It is the heart of the home, which also defines the transition between public and private zones.
The architects aimed to create a spatial planning and interior experience that is deeply rooted in traditional elements. All this while still providing modern facilities and comfort.
The designers deliberately keep the design choices simple—even in the exteriors—avoiding excess while steering clear of stark minimalism, ultimately giving the house a sense of lightness and harmony.
The designers consciously chose materials such as flooring, furniture, and the overall colour palette to reflect this design ideology, complementing them with a lush green landscape that adds to the home’s charm. They also sourced all finishes and décor locally and naturally, staying true to the context.
