  • This Japandi Style Compact Home Maintains An Open Feel | Space Tattva Design Studio

    [Sassy_Social_Share]

In the green outskirts of Vadodara, this japandi style project transforms a 400-square-foot chamber into a 900-square-foot sanctuary. The transformation occurs by seamlessly extending the terrace into a serene lounge, bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and an indulgent bath. The structure is designed with consideration for the lush green surroundings and the existing architecture of the home, maintaining an open feel.

    Design Vision

The brief was to create a premium bedroom extension without losing the connection with its outdoors. The designers at Space Tattva envisioned a japandi style space that would breathe with nature, absorb light and maintain circulation. The orientation naturally supports the east-facing terrace and south-facing bedroom wall, prioritising large openings, cross-ventilation, and earthy interiors.

    Material & Finishes

Inspired by Japandi style minimalism, the material and colour palette lean towards earthy tones, warm wood, and lime-wash plaster, showcasing a soft tactility. The use of SPC flooring, natural veneers, and diffused curtains helps to achieve a subtle, layered illumination throughout the space.

The use of subtly toned fabrics and the indigo-toned cyanotype-inspired artwork in the lounge accentuates the serenity, keeping the space balanced within its neutral palette.

    Furniture & Spatial Integration

This aesthetic extends its built-in seating along the windows and bespoke furniture with rounded edges to avoid visual heaviness. The designers design every piece to blend with the interior, focusing on light, volume, and the green landscape beyond the walls.

    Material Expression & Detailing

The design’s main anchor is the porous exposed-brick jaali that forms the south façade, filtering harsh sunlight while allowing ventilation. The placement of bricks is done at varying angles to create depth and shadows, maintaining the uniformity with the exterior façade. The addition of planters and trees adds a layer of privacy without compromising openness.

    Thermal Comfort & Sustainability

Thermal comfort is enhanced by introducing insulation on the slabs and new brick walls, which reduces heat gain and lowers energy consumption. The space has an effortless flow, as the entrance opens into a warm lounge with a pocket sliding door, leading into the bedroom. The walk-in wardrobe is a narrow, softly illuminated passage that guides you towards the bathroom.

    Material Palette & Continuity

The material ties the home together by exposed-brick exteriors and a blend of lime-wash walls, veneers and aluminium-framed sliders inside. Every element reflects clarity of intention, making the architecture feel like an extension of natural surroundings.

The corner seat by the full-height window creates a meditative pause with filtered sunlight, greenery and soft upholstery. The bed and headboard feel connected to nature through the play of daylight streaming in from the jaali and the movement of trees outside.

The bathroom exudes calmness with its textured neutral tiles and brushed-gold fixtures, which help elevate the earthy palette.

    Sustainability & Performance

The project follows a simple ethos of seamless transitions and clean lines, evoking quiet grandeur. Sustainability, through insulation, local materials, and passive design strategies, helps reduce the mechanical load. The filtered daylight, spatial calm, breezy openness, and crafted warmth of the materials come together in a way that feels luxurious, speaking patience and precision.
