Located in Konkangaon near Sangamner, Sindhu House is a weekend home with a terracotta roof designed by ABDS for a family of four. Named after the client’s mother, the project explores the idea of overlaps—between built and open spaces, private retreat and the surrounding agricultural landscape.
This Home With A Terracotta Roof Explores The Overlaps Between Built & Open Spaces | Ajitbendre Design Studio (ABDS)
Much like the Sindhu (river) moves through varied terrain, the house is shaped by a sequence of overlapping planes and voids. A long, sloping terracotta roof acts as a continuous canopy. It extends across the house to protect it from sun and monsoon rains while forming deep shaded threshold spaces along its edges.
Living and kitchen areas are oriented toward these transitional zones, encouraging visual continuity and shared family interaction. Open decks, generous overhangs, and carefully positioned openings promote cross-ventilation and passive cooling. Thus, ensuring comfort during weekend use across changing seasons.
A restrained material palette combines earthy textures with steel structural elements, balancing warmth and durability. The designers conceived Sindhu House as a contemporary weekend retreat with a terracotta roof. It responds sensitively to climate, landscape, and everyday family life.
The North Porch (Arrival): Facing North, the Entrance Porch acts as a naturally shaded threshold that stays cool throughout the day. It serves as a breezy outdoor room where the family can gather away from the direct sun.
The Central Living Hall: The Living Room is a grand double-height space. As the central “heart” of the house, it facilitates natural airflow and connects the social and private wings.
The designers strategically placed the kitchen in the South-East corner to capture the soft morning light. If you’dThis placement keeps the cooking area bright and energetic for the family’s daily routine.
The South-West Office: Located in the South-West, the Office provides a quiet, private environment for focused work. Its position at the rear of the ground floor ensures a clear separation between professional tasks and the active social zones of the home.
The designers organized the guest bedroom and utility spaces to maintain a quiet, cooler atmosphere, ensuring comfort for visitors and efficiency for household management.
The designers elevated the master bedroom on the upper floor to ensure maximum privacy. It features a private balcony, offering the parents a quiet sanctuary with wide views of the Konkangaon horizon.
Overlapping Terraces: The upper floor is defined by expansive outdoor decks. The North-West Terrace is the perfect spot for the family to gather and enjoy sunset views, while the North Terrace provides a visual link back to the entrance below.
