Nestled along the serene riverbanks of Singtam, Sikkim, this riverfront hillside residence is envisioned as a refined yet deeply personal family hillside home that celebrates nature, comfort, and contemporary living. Designed by The Insite Stories, the project reflects a thoughtful balance between luxury and warmth, where spatial planning, materiality, and emotion come together to shape everyday experiences.
The designers conceived the home for a family of three to support togetherness and allow moments of privacy. Rather than a purely visual statement, the designers aimed to create a home that feels lived-in, intuitive, and emotionally grounded.
The designers organized the approximately 5,000 sq. ft. residence as a multi-level home, carefully zoning it to accommodate varied lifestyle needs. Each floor serves a distinct purpose while remaining visually and spatially connected, ensuring fluid movement throughout the house.
This Hillside Home Is A Thoughtful Balance Between Luxury & Warmth | The In-site Stories
The first floor of the hillside home functions as the primary private living zone. It includes a comfortable family living area, a suite-style master bedroom, a guest bedroom, and a dedicated kids’ room. The designers designed each space to feel calm and welcoming, unifying it through a consistent material palette and soft lighting. The master bedroom incorporates a seating corner, allowing moments of quiet relaxation within the personal space.
A key design highlight is the strategic placement of the kitchen, which allows it to serve both the indoor dining space and the river-facing balcony. A thoughtfully designed kitchen window enables food and interaction to flow seamlessly between indoor and outdoor areas, ensuring that no space feels disconnected during gatherings or everyday meals.
The interiors follow a neutral and timeless design language, where textures and detailing take precedence over visual excess. Natural stone flooring, including Italian marble sourced from Kishangarh, grounds the spaces with understated elegance. The designers finished the walls using textured treatments such as Asian Paints Velour, complementing them with wooden paneling and Flex Stone cladding in select areas.
The designers created a mix of custom-designed fixed elements and curated loose furniture pieces, including select imports from China. Artefacts sourced from China add character and individuality, subtly enhancing the emotional depth of the spaces without overwhelming the design narrative.
Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping the ambience of the home. A layered lighting scheme using architectural and decorative fixtures by White Teak Company and Hybec enhances spatial depth and highlights architectural features. Warm cove lighting, accent illumination, and statement fixtures together create a calm and inviting atmosphere across all levels.
Custom wooden doors finished with Greenply veneer, premium hardware by Häfele, and large glazed windows by Weatherseal further reinforce the home’s refined detailing while ensuring durability and comfort suited to the hill climate.
Bathrooms are fitted with premium sanitaryware by Kohler, while the inclusion of a jacuzzi adds a wellness-oriented dimension to the residence.
The designers dedicated the second floor to entertainment and shared family experiences. A fully equipped home theatre anchors this level, designed with controlled lighting and acoustically treated surfaces to deliver an immersive cinematic experience. Adjacent to it lies the kitchen and dining area—planned as the heart of the home.
The river-facing balcony becomes an extension of the dining area, offering uninterrupted views of the flowing river and surrounding greenery. Designed as a sit-out space, it encourages moments of pause, conversation, and connection with nature.
The third floor introduces a quieter, more reflective experience. A serene puja room forms the spiritual core of this level, opening out to two terrace-style balconies. One of these terraces features a Tulsi plantation and greenery zone, blending spirituality with nature and daily rituals. Above this level lies an open terrace that offers expansive views of the hills and river, completing the vertical journey of the home.
What truly defines this hillside home is the emotion embedded within its design. Beyond luxury and functionality, the designers shaped the residence around everyday rituals. Shared meals, quiet mornings, spiritual practices, playful moments with a child, and relaxed evenings overlooking the river. The designers designed each space to adapt to changing moods and needs, ensuring longevity in both function and feeling.
The Riverfront Hillside Luxury Home stands as a thoughtful response to its context. Here, contemporary interiors are softened by warmth, nature, and human connection. Rooted in its surroundings yet modern in expression, the project reflects The Insite Stories’ philosophy. One of creating homes that are not just visually refined, but emotionally meaningful and enduring.
