  • Designing Playful Precision Inside the Modmacon Animation Design Office | Studio AsA

    [Sassy_Social_Share]

In the world of animation design and gaming, imagination fuels everything from character creation to storytelling. When Modmacon, a Spain-headquartered animation and game design company, approached Studio AsA to design their new satellite office in India, the brief was clear yet challenging: to create a workspace that sparks creativity without compromising focus.

This was a design-heavy project where artistic freedom met functionality and where every curve, colour, and corner had to reflect the spirit of a brand that thrives on visual storytelling.

    Understanding the User DNA

Before the first line was drawn, we began with an essential question: who will use this space, and how will they feel in it?

The Modmacon team comprises artists, animators, and designers who work extensively on 3D modelling and colour composition. Their creative rhythm thrives in dim, focused environments. Traditional workplace lighting, often uniform and bright, would have been counterintuitive here.

    animation design

So, instead of opting for standard linear lighting, we introduced individual lighting controls for each workstation allowing every artist to adjust brightness based on their task. This gave users autonomy while maintaining visual comfort across the space.

We also integrated dedicated switchboards within easy reach, ensuring a seamless workflow for teams who often shift between digital tools and sketchpads.

    Balancing Focus and Collaboration

The client’s work culture values spontaneity. Brainstorming happens as often in informal discussions as in structured meetings. To support this, the office layout was intentionally designed with a 60:40 split between workstations and collaborative zones.

    animation design

The 40 workstations were planned for ergonomic comfort and visual alignment which were spacious enough for multi-screen setups and personal expression. In contrast, the collaborative areas were deliberately fluid, designed as two informal zones where teams could gather for idea exchanges, moodboard sessions, or impromptu critiques. These areas act as creative sanctuaries that are flexible, colourful, and full of movement.

A Meeting Room That Thinks Creatively

At the heart of the animation design workspace lies a 10-seater meeting room, designed not as a formal boardroom, but as an interactive idea lab. The Corian marble tabletop doubles up as a writable surface, complemented by an interactive display system that allows artists to sketch, present, or storyboard in real-time.

This blend of tactile and digital engagement encourages teams to draw, discuss, and design, all in one space.

    A Palette That Mirrors Identity

Animation as a discipline thrives on emotion, colour, and personality. Modmacon’s global identity uses bold, youthful hues and fluid shapes, a theme we embraced wholeheartedly.

    animation design

The furniture across the animation design office carries cartoon-inspired curves, infusing the space with a sense of play and movement. Bright, brand-driven colours break the monotony, creating visual landmarks throughout the workspace. From lounge seating to manager cabins, each piece of furniture was chosen to reflect Modmacon’s creative identity: cheerful yet purposeful, bold yet balanced.

The two manager cabins and the CEO cabin follow the same language, with softer palettes and sculptural furniture that complement the rest of the workspace without losing visual harmony.

    Designing for Creative Energy

No gaming company’s office is complete without play. Modmacon’s workspace includes a foosball area, not as an afterthought but as an integral part of its culture. It’s a space where creativity resets itself, where play fuels productivity.

The pantry, designed adjacent to one of the informal zones, becomes another social anchor. It encourages casual gatherings over coffee, over laughter, over new ideas.

Together, these pockets of interaction turn the office into more than just a workplace; they make it a living ecosystem of creativity.

The Outcome: A Workplace That Thinks Like Its People

The completed Modmacon office reflects the duality of its users, structured yet free-spirited, focused yet fun. It demonstrates how spatial design can mirror creative processes, and how brand identity can translate into spatial experience.

Every area in the office from the personalised lighting at each desk to the vibrant collaboration corners was built to support the way creative minds work. And that’s what makes this project special. It doesn’t just look creative; it works creatively.

    Closing Thought

The Modmacon project reaffirms what we at Studio AsA: designing workplaces that inspire people to do their best work. When design thinking aligns with brand character and user behaviour, the result is a story that moves, evolves, and empowers.
