This 1500 sq ft home design draws its soul from the idea of warmth — not just in materiality, but in memory. Designed for a family deeply connected to culture, the spaces are layered with tactile textures, natural light, and handcrafted details. The concept was to create a rooted yet modern sanctuary — where each room flows with understated elegance, while honouring individual expression.
While the site context wasn’t a dominant constraint, the home’s design responds deeply to the emotional context of its occupants. It reflects the owners’ desire for both privacy and openness, legacy and lightnes — translating into a design language that is earthy, woodsy, and emotionally intelligent.
A palette of warm neutrals, rich walnut tones, and brass accents brings continuity across spaces, with subtle nods to Indian craft and soul, without any overt traditionalism.
Idea of Warmth Envelopes This 1500 sq ft Home Design | The Yello Butterfly Studio
The apartment opens into a compact yet thoughtfully designed foyer that doubles as a semi-formal meeting space for the host’s work-related discussions. To balance privacy and openness, the upper half of the wall between the foyer and living room was removed and replaced with a custom partition in metal and glass. This not only invites natural light into the foyer but also maintains spatial separation. The false ceiling has been styled to create a subtle zoning effect. The entire design was guided by vastu, including the placement of the pooja room, which was carefully aligned to specific directional degrees — a challenge that turned into a celebrated success.
Rooted in warmth and serenity, the living room features lofty ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an open-plan layout that flows into the dining area. A taupe-toned seating lounge anchors the space visually, while personal elements — including an awe-inspiring display of classical musical instruments belonging to the hostess — add artistic flair and character. A neutral earthy palette enhances the sense of calm, while layered lighting and wooden details bring in a refined richness. We seamlessly wove Vastu compliance into the overall space planning and color curation.
The dining zone, integrated into the grand living area, reflects soft elegance and practicality. A glass-topped dining table sits alongside a wall adorned with a champagne-tinted mirror and display shelves that add depth and tranquil glow.
The modular kitchen responds to the homeowner’s need for generous storage. We introduced floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in the softest ivory finish to lighten the visual weight, while strategically placing darker accents to add contrast and sophistication.
The kitchen balances form and function beautifully, resonating with the calm, earthy narrative of the rest of the home.
Following the overall earthy, refined theme of the home, the master bedroom is a tranquil composition of wood-finished cladding, neutral tones, and functional comfort. Importantly, the client had a strong preference for avoiding wooden wall paneling due to prior experiences with leakage in their previous home.
This led to an innovative material choice that maintained the aesthetic of wood without compromising on longevity or structural resilience. The cladding solution not only addressed the concern but elevated the visual softness of the room. The adjoining master bath continues the same palette with textured, earthy finishes and warm metallic highlights, creating a cohesive and soothing suite.
We crafted this space as a richly layered composition of personality and craftsmanship, bringing to life the homeowners’ daughter’s vision of a vintage, apothecary-inspired sanctuary. The furniture was fully custom-made in solid wood by master artisans from Rajasthan, crafted off-site and transported to Mumbai.
We designed each cabinet and piece to be wall-mounted despite their exceptional weight, and custom-detailed hidden metallic reinforcements to give them an antique appearance. Seasonal rains in Rajasthan further delayed installation, turning the execution of this room into a feat of patience and precision. The result is a timeless bedroom—one that balances architectural strength with textural warmth through dual-toned wainscoting, botanical accents, and brass lighting.
In contrast to the rest of the home’s warm palette, the parents’ bedroom features a cooler color story. Crisp white walls meet forest-toned wallpaper and subtle greens, creating a peaceful, serene atmosphere that feels both refreshing and restful.
