This Sloping Roof House Evolved After The Initial Construction Phase was Completed | Studio8055

The journey of this sloping roof house residence began uniquely when the client initially approached a structural engineer to begin construction. With the columns and plinth beams already laid up to the ground floor level, the architectural intervention commenced. Upon engagement, our team revised the spatial layout, removing unnecessary spaces and optimising the design to align with the client’s preferences.

Editor’s Note: “This house emerges from the ground, part reality and part dream. Where white planes intersect with crimson accents, and emptiness carves channels for the sun, a peaceful energy unfolds. Based in vernacular sense with angular modern lines, the house becomes a carrier for light, air, and form.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

Design Approach

This adaptive approach laid the foundation for the design’s distinct character, particularly the central cutout spanning all floors, enhancing connectivity, ventilation, and natural light throughout the structure.

Situated in Hyderabad, this residence is an architectural exploration of transforming Traditional sloped roofs into a contemporary expression.

Site Constraints

The site, positioned at -13 feet below road level, is bordered by a two-story residence to the South because of which we avoided any opening on the South side of the building, while the other three sides remain open, allowing for uninterrupted ventilation and natural light penetration.

A key design focus was to create visual emphasis on the northeast-facing façade, the most visible side from the road. This approach not only establishes a strong street presence but also enhances the interaction between built form and its urban context.

Spatial Planning and Layout

The design is layered across multiple levels, where the first-floor volumes play a crucial role in shaping the spatial experience. A central dining area acts as the core, surrounded by bridges, cutouts and skylights above, allows the natural light throughout the house.

These punctures create dynamic shadow patterns, fostering a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. The movement through these spaces is, encouraging engagement with light, breeze, and shifting perspectives.

Sculptural Facade Contrast

The residence’s clean white surfaces serve as a canvas for bold sunset-coloured inserts, strategically conceptualised to accentuate sharp angular forms and recessed voids.

This contrast not only enhances the sculptural quality of the façade but also guides the eye towards the northeast focal point, reinforcing the design intent.

Deep recesses and angular projections are designed to balance openness and shade, maintaining a distinct visual identity. The confluence of voids, floating planes, and interwoven levels results in a space that is visually striking yet functionally seamless.

This project stands as a modern interpretation of traditional spatial principles. Moreover, it adheres to vernacular design rules while embracing a contemporary architectural language.

With its carefully curated volumes, interplay of levels, and emphasis on natural elements, the residence redefines contextual modern living. At the same time, it remains rooted in tradition yet boldly progressive.
