  • Contemporary Home Interiors Reflect The Cultural Richness of This Hyderabad Residence | Studio Nilasha

For this expansive Hyderabad residence, Nilasha Studio adopted a design philosophy deeply rooted in contextual storytelling and quiet elegance. Drawing inspiration from the city’s layered identity, where centuries-old architectural heritage coexists with contemporary home interiors and urbanism, the studio envisioned a home that mirrors Hyderabad’s unique cultural and visual landscape.

Editor’s Note: “When monsoon rains touch the lake’s shore and clouds project shadowy reflections, the Serene Edge becomes a vibrant tapestry of season and spirit. The home exhales with its environment—floating, listening, replying. Here, light dances in craftsmanship, and silence speaks in stone.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

    Design Philosophy

The philosophy centered on creating a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity. Every material choice and spatial intervention was guided by a commitment to authenticity, with an emphasis on local craftsmanship, natural materials, and understated luxury.

The studio sought to move away from overt opulence, instead allowing textures, light, and curated details to define the home’s aesthetic character. Functionality was seamlessly integrated with emotional depth.

The client’s desire for a space that doubles as an art gallery was translated into a layout that offers clarity, openness, and purpose, while still feeling intimate and personal. Each room is anchored in natural light and a muted palette, designed to foreground the art and the surrounding landscape rather than overshadow it.

Collaboration played a vital role in the design approach. By working with artisans and designers like Sandeep Sangaru and Arjun Rathi, the studio brought together bespoke furniture, lighting, and detailing that honored Indian craft traditions while embracing contemporary forms. The designers carefully layered these elements to create a home that feels timeless—grounded in its place, yet globally aware.

    Entrance

Upon entering the residence, the grand foyer welcomes you and sets the tone for the entire home with its understated elegance. This space flows effortlessly into the living area and showcases vintage European hardware, including ornate brass doorknobs and handles from the late 1800s, which lend a touch of continental grandeur. The foyer introduces the home’s central design ethos—serene luxury rooted in craftsmanship and cultural richness.

    Living Area

Natural light pours through floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the expansive living area and bringing the outdoors in, while curated artworks take centre stage. A bespoke triangulated seating arrangement by Sandeep Sangaru anchors the space, thoughtfully designed to offer multiple perspectives of the surrounding artwork. Muted tones and soft textures enhance the serene atmosphere while keeping the focus on art and architectural detailing.

    Dining Area

The dining area is a standout feature that reflects both cultural and design ingenuity. Nilasha Studio custom-designed the dining table, shaping it like a lotus leaf with smaller leaf-like segments for each diner. As a result, it has become a cherished centerpiece in the home.

Brass accents from Sage Living add a touch of warmth to the space. Additionally, local materials like Kota stone and river quartz enhance its understated elegance. There is no specific mention of a kitchen, workspace, or conference room in the text.

    Entertainment Area

Several unique spatial features contribute to the home’s charm. The entertainment area on the first floor features an infinity pool that visually merges with the lake. As a result, it offers breathtaking views and a heightened sense of tranquillity. Adjacent to the pool is a plush lounge area with sleek stone finishes.

A Channapatna-inspired double-height lighting installation by Arjun Rathi enhances the staircase, blending antique brass components with regional craft.

Seasonal changes, especially during the monsoon, dramatically transform the outdoor experience. As a result, the deck appears to hover above the water, reinforcing the home’s deep connection to its natural setting.
