  • The Japandi Interior Style Inspires a Serene and Functional Pilates Space | Teak and Linen

The design philosophy behind this minimalist Pilates studio centers on creating a serene, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space that promotes mindfulness and well-being. It blends the clean lines and functionality of Scandinavian design with the natural warmth and wabi-sabi principles of Japanese aesthetics to reflect the calm and balanced essence of the japandi interior style.

The existing space was actually a 3BHK residential apartment – now being converted to a Pilates studio. The space needed to feel open and spacious with priority being just the essential equipment required. Storage solutions are integrated seamlessly to maintain a clean appearance whereas the open shelving is dedicated for stacking various exercise equipment. Every element serves a purpose, contributing to the overall functionality of the space. The walls were all knocked off and the space has been planned and designed to add maximum natural light.  A small cafe space needed to be integrated – to provide a healthy meal or simple refreshments to those attending the classes.

    Entrance and Lobby

The entrance conveys a sense of elegance and warmth. This simple paneling with a texture paint acts as a backdrop to the logo – pulling focus on the services provided, rather than the design.  Soft lighting creates a welcoming and calming atmosphere, while gold lettering adds a touch of sophistication. Upon entering the space, images of the founder greet you in a small but cozy spot that leads to the office. The main distribution board remains in place, hidden behind a small cane shutter.

    Office

Upon entering the office space, the design maximizes functionality within a limited area. A significant feature is the built-in storage with a but of open shelving so as to break the heaviness. The lower shelf acts as a small mandir space and the upper one for decor. Light colours define the space, while textured glass allows maximum light to filter in from all other areas.

    Cafe

An intimate café now replaces the former kitchen, where a palette of light surfaces creates a sense of spaciousness. Rust accents subtly introduce warmth, while bold striped upholstery draws the eye as a focal point. The use of various materials such as fluted glass, woven cane, rust tile, and terrazzo, adds depth and visual interest and textural depth. A unique feature is the woven cane paneling on the bar front, which cleverly breaks up the counter’s mass while ensuring essential ventilation for refrigeration. Tinted, textured glass discreetly conceals the kitchen shelving to maintain an open feel.

    Studio Space

The studio emphasizes functionality and cleanliness, both essential for a Pilates practice. Mirror-on-mirror paneling expands the sense of space and doubles as both a practical workout element and an aesthetic feature.

The large windows all open into the studio space, allowing for maximum light to filter in. Multiple Pilates reformers line one side of the studio in neat rows. Meanwhile, Pilates chairs occupy the other section, keeping the space clean and open.

The light colour palette and minimalist decor create a calm and serene atmosphere, conducive to concentration and focus. The decor is minimalist, with a single framed artwork to reinforce the clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

Built-in storage cabinets provide a place to store equipment in the open and supplies on the inside. The cabinets feature integrated lighting, adding a subtle design element. A dedicated shelving unit showcases decor and can also feature future product collaborations.
