  • Advait Is A Contemporary Design Home Rooted In Spiritual Symbolism | New Dimension

The house is named “ADVAIT,” which means “UNIQUE” and a strong sense of spirituality. The brief was to design a contemporary design home for a family of six people and their support staff. The concept was based on mandala architecture, which represents the symbol of the universe, a cosmic diagram that functions as a powerful aid to meditation and concentration.

    Spatial Zoning

The house is divided into 2 levels—the ground floor and the first floor. The area is segregated into 4 zones—recreational, public, semi-public, and private space—to achieve complete privacy.

    Massing

The massing of the house follows a step formation to cater to the higher side requirement and provide open spaces on each floor.

The courtyard in the house facilitates stack ventilation, while a skylight featuring the mandala symbol casts its shadow on the vertical staircase wall during the daytime. All interior space opens completely into the surroundings by the use of a glass façade and garden area.

    Design Intent

The main aim of evolving a design language is to maximize the use of natural light, ventilation, and accessible green space within the home.

As you move into the voluminous living space, the open-plan floor centers around the dining hall, which connects to the green space and backyard garden, while all areas interconnect to support smooth movement and a sense of freedom.

This large space sits at the center of the house, with both ends fully opened and glazed with glass to allow cross ventilation and create the feeling of a vast, opaque space.

The ground floor ensures accessibility by placing the parents’ bedroom, dining area, and kitchen at the same elevation. The parking area sits strategically in the lowermost west corner. The living room and master bedroom open directly onto a terrace garden.

    Material Palette

The material palette is completely minimal with the use of light colors, wood, and glass. Each room and wall has a different geometrical story to achieve the conceptual symbol of the Mandala. The material sensibility has a soft and muted color palette of aqua blues, beige, and blush.

The courtyard, backyard area, and external landscape are predominantly tropical, low-maintenance species, creating a lush tropical feel inside the spaces.

Furthermore, solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems actively save energy and resources as sustainable solutions.
