This Japandi Office Aesthetics Creates a Tranquil and Focused Workspace | The Prop House

“In the midst of nothingness, everything becomes clear.”- Haruki Murakami.

Behind the bold, vibrant, avant-garde luxury design house—Ekaya—is a calm and tranquil Japandi office. The team wanted a minimal, clutter-free space, a blank canvas that allows them to breathe in nothingness and breathe out design. The office comprises a 10-seater conference room, a cabin, 17 workstations, a breakout room, a pantry, a toilet, etc., and a lunchroom following the aesthetics of Japandi. The approach was to charge the negative space in the office for unadulterated thinking. Every form, shape, and object has been given mute qualities that are only heard by texture and utility.

The open-plan office is encapsulated by a mist of vanilla, layered with twin textures of bouclé’ and linen, finally grounded by the ever-so-warm maple wood veneer and laced with tiny details of cane. The space is located on a busy main road in Defence Colony, New Delhi, and has a deficiency of vitamin D. Hence, the layout was kept mostly open with glass partitions where needed. The floor plate was like a stencil of the letter H with 4 pockets in every corner.

Workstations

You enter the space into a passage that divides the conference room on the right and the workstations on the left. The workstations are simple in structure with tones of cream and white. Sleek white metal legs have a light maple table top accompanied by Irish cream drawers.

Every workstation is illuminated with sleek profile lights running the length of the workstation. The conference room becomes the highlight of the space as a result of a structural challenge. The central space had 2 large columns that met your eye as soon as you entered.

The design softens the welcome by rounding the two columns, while all the storage bulk spans the length of the conference room between them.

Finished in light maple wood veneer with typical Scandinavian details, the storage that divides the space into the conference room and the workstations is accessible from both sides. Atop is a checked rubberwood and glass divider for privacy, reflecting Japanese aesthetics.

Conference Room

White sheer curtains and textured linen paneling on the TV wall insulate the conference room, ensuring that everything discussed inside remains private.

Keeping in union with the aesthetics of Japandi, the conference room features cane lights to steer it away from looking like a conventional corporate office.

Private Spaces: Cabin

The cabin is a cozy 3-seater, with a beautiful oak table crafted with Japanese leg joinery and wood details. The chairs have cane backs with bouclé’ seats. The highlight of the room is the shelving that merges with the wall with a floating closed oak wood storage; sometimes also used as a standing desk.

A breakout room and lunchroom at the farther end, a cabin, and a workstation bay at the front. The central portion houses the conference room and the main cluster of workstations.
