A home for artists, by artists, presenting The Biophilic Home—a space that truly defines who we are. At Studio Tilt, we as a team lean towards biophilic interior design that blurs boundaries between nature and structure. It is a thought process and way of life that both Abhijit and I resonate with and think is timeless. Nature is both the source and guide for design innovation and expression.
The idea of openness and unobstructed spaces is truly exciting and nothing less than the need of the hour! Free movement between interior and exterior spaces and the coherent fusion of natural materials and plants into built environments are features that reflect our personal style. This Goan home combines contemporary biophilic interior design with traditional elements, giving us the perfect happy, tranquil retreat.
The Biophilic Interior Design Creates a Happy and Tranquil Goan Retreat | Studio Tilt
The large living and dining areas automatically transform into the heart of the home, with tropical foliage unleashing the ‘forest feel.’. A few statement pieces that grab attention negated the need for art on the walls. Both spaces exude a warm, earthy feel and have a minimal layout, with jute rugs tying the space together against flooring that mimics the grains of natural stone.
The living area overlooks the balcony on one side where plants grow in a hydroponic environment. A live-edge wooden dining table dominates the dining area against a backdrop of tall, dense plants. Moreover, it adds a sense of boldness to a somewhat refined interior.
A statement black, arched, bespoke bar cabinet at one end leads to the kitchen. Furthermore, the ‘au naturel’ vibe with black and wooden cabinetry. The pièce de résistance in the space, though, is the central, custom-made wicker chandelier. Additionally, it separates the living and dining zones. Made by local artisans in Chennai, the commissioned light fitting took more than a month to make.
Flooded with natural light, we fell in love with the space at first sight. With large windows and the entire living room wall opening up to a balcony, the home instantly had the potential to become our sanctuary. The word ‘biophilia’ was first introduced by psychoanalyst Eric Fromm, who defined it as the ‘passionate love of life and of all that is alive.’.
The material palette largely comprises of natural materials like wood, cane, wicker, bamboo, and jute. Additionally, the home exudes opulence through warm hues and biophilic simplicity. The earthy color palette mimics the warmth with mainly shades of ivory and caramel, letting plants take center stage.
The layout and space structure naturally in the bedrooms, where one can curl up with a book, sip on a cuppa, and gaze out.
The bedrooms are an extension of the tropical mood, designed as idyllic, earthy oases that are aesthetically pleasing and in sync with the surroundings. In the master bedroom, against a dark grey wall, lies a central black wooden bed flanked by nightstands with cane detailing and jute bedside lamps for ambient lighting.
The window seating makes for the perfect spot to unwind with a book or a steaming cup of coffee. The guest bedroom features a cane bed between ornate glass lamps and a pop of mustard cushions for company.
Against a splash of caramel on the wall lies art collected from our travels across Europe. Bathed in ample sunlight, the large window seatings are a gateway to the outside world. This is where we enjoy our most treasured moments—the sound of the rain, the sight of squirrels chasing birds on the trees, the whistle of the leaves, and just the feeling of wind in your hair.
Today, the concept of biophilia is supported by a more scientific understanding of the psychology behind building-based wellness. Research suggests that the substantial amount of time we spend within built environments contributes significantly to our mental and physical well-being.
