Mitti, a distinctive interior design for restaurant, has redefined the experience of Indian home cuisine by blending natural materials with a warm and inviting atmosphere. True to its name, which means “soil” in Hindi, the design concept embraces natural elements such as wood, bamboo, and mud plaster to create a calm, earthy ambiance. This fusion of traditional design with modern elements forms the foundation of the restaurant, where each corner evokes a sense of nostalgia and homeliness. The integration of cozy garden spaces softly illuminated interiors, and handcrafted details create an ideal dining environment for guests of all ages, ensuring a welcoming space that feels like home.
Editor’s Note: “Mitti by Adhbhut Vilakshan, is a restaurant that bridges the cherished memories of Indian homely cuisine and sustainable practices. Nestled in an old colonial villa, reimagined after 25 years in Indore, a earthy design featuring mud plaster, bamboo, and wood goes into this eatery. Breakfast garden dining, and handcrafted art pieces create an interesting experience—a true celebration of culture, family, and nature.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
This Interior Design For Restaurant Feels Like ‘Home’ | Adhbhut Vilakshan
Set within a renovated 3,000-square-foot villa in a prime residential area of Indore, Mitti retains the original charm of its 25-year-old architecture while incorporating thoughtful, modern interventions. The villa’s rich history is respected by preserving its most significant elements, including the original Italian marble floors and saagwan wood railings, doors, and windows.
Minimal redesigns were made to respect the heritage of the property, optimizing the space while adhering to a sustainable design approach. The checkered patterns of the original windows inspired the ceiling designs, crowned by a bamboo chandelier in each room, which adds a harmonious, organic feel to the entire space.
At the core of the design philosophy for Mitti was the idea of “preserving traditional elements while breathing in the moment.” This concept is reflected in every detail, from the curves and arches that blend seamlessly with Indian artistry, to the hand-painted Hindi typography, Gond art, Pichwai paintings, and mandalas that decorate the walls.
Poignant poetry and iconic quotations from cultural icons add depth to the restaurant’s visual narrative, tying together past and present in an eloquent homage to India’s rich heritage. Central to this visual storytelling, the transformation of the atrium into a Wall of Fame, celebrates portraits of renowned cultural figures. Additionally, it creates a captivating focal point that honors heritage and inspiration
Sustainability has been a core principle throughout the project. By retaining original materials and introducing over 100 plants, including vegetables, Mitti offers guests an authentic farm-to-table experience. The interior design for restaurant enhances its commitment to organic practices by integrating the garden. Furthermore, it grows fresh, in-house ingredients and incorporates them into the menu.
This connection to nature ensures that each dish served is as pure as the environment in which it is prepared. It offers guests not only a culinary delight but also a transparent dining experience rooted in safety and purity
Given the challenges of seating 80-100 guests within a 2,100-square-foot service space, the team implemented creative solutions to maximize the restaurant’s capacity and atmosphere. The garden, once an unused and unkempt area, transforms into a charming, floral-scented outdoor dining space. Additionally, it offers guests a peaceful retreat surrounded by an abundance of greenery.”
A private 8-seater dining room, seamlessly connected to the garden, adds versatility to the space and allows for intimate gatherings. Thoughtfully preserved and redesigned the original rooms of the villa into semi-private dining areas. Moreover, it offers guests a sense of privacy while still enjoying the light, airy ambiance that defines Mitti.
Throughout the restaurant, the use of light beige-toned mud plaster on the walls creates a calming, serene atmosphere. Also, the original Sheesham wood furniture, adorned with Rattan layers, adds a subtle touch of luxury.
The minimalism invites diners to feel at ease and stay longer, whether enjoying a meal or spending time with loved ones. Mitti carefully crafts each space to create an environment that feels comfortable much like the experience of dining at home.
In its design, Mitti transcends the traditional concept of a family restaurant by offering more than just a meal. It provides a soulful and fulfilling experience. Every element of the restaurant celebrates family, nature, and tradition through sustainable design, nostalgic warmth, and ambiance. It’s a place where guests can connect with both the food and the story behind the space. This connection allows them to create memories as enduring as the traditions it honors.
