  • This Large House Plan is a Clear Balance of Individuality and Socializing | AKG Design Studio

The intent was to design a clean, uncluttered and large house plan with ample breathing space, where the family of four could live comfortably. Being a large house, they wanted the plan to allow enjoying the space while catering to a lifestyle. That is a balance of both: a clear sense of individualism, as well as a fair amount of socializing in the same space.

Located in Kharadi, one of the poshest and most rapidly upcoming areas, it was clear that this home needed to align with the sophisticated and contemporary vibe of the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, it maintains a sense of subtlety without being flashy or jarring.

The challenge, and USP of this project, was to be able to accommodate all of the above while retaining a hyper-customized and minimal approach for every nook and cranny of the space. Retaining memories and making room for new ones, the conscious decision of clean lines. Furthermore, optimal furniture, and a classic color palette of black and white complement one another to that aim.

    Geometry of Space

Spread across close to 4000 sq. ft. of minimalism, this home has enough breathing space for members to be themselves. With just the right amount of embellishment, they also show off their personalities in the best possible light.

We approached the space in a way that used its geometry to our advantage. The layout, defined by simple forms, a minimal color and material palette, and abundant natural light, follows the principle of “less is more.” Everything in the home aligns with this concept, creating a clean, cohesive design.

    Furniture Pieces

Furthermore, to accentuate this aspect of simplicity, we chose to go with minimal pieces of furniture. This embodies clean lines giving the space both definition and direction. These lines guide you from one space to the next, increasing your awareness of the intentionally created islands of space in between. This approach seamlessly balances the private and semi-private areas. Additionally, it opens up the space with this careful characterization.

    Minimalist Artifacts

True to the theme of minimalism, we decided, along with the family, to avoid over-embellishing the space. We focused on incorporating only those artifacts that added genuine value, either aesthetically or sentimentally, for them.

This decision allowed us to boldly display crockery openly in the house, a feature often seen as “out of fashion” for the 21st century. We also showcased original paintings made by their daughter, adding a personal, authentic, and meaningful touch to the space.

    Neutral Palette

Wanting the family to truly enjoy the space without hindrance, we used a neutral palette of white, beige, black, and wooden finishes. Additionally, we accentuated the space with hints of color and texture, incorporating upholstery like carpets, bedspreads, and cushions throughout various parts of the house.

The curtains have been kept plain to maintain openness and minimalism. Meanwhile, the white floor is consistent throughout the space, both unites the design. Additionally, it makes the area appear larger and brighter.

    Customized Details

Along with this, several customized details have been worked on in various areas, especially private ones like the bedrooms. Following the personal tastes and personalities of the occupants, like the inclusion of black in the son’s bedroom.

    Design Approach

Architect Ashwina Ketan Gandhi’s minimalist approach at AKG Design Studio, Pune, ensured that while softer elements like furnishings may evolve with the growing family, the core design would remain intact. This approach guarantees the design’s sustainability and longevity over time.

We have stuck to using ample potted plants in various corners of the home for the burst of color and freshness they add to the space. These plants also help us create a sense of fresh and organic comfort. Meanwhile, it regulates the overall temperature of the space. The large open terrace, placed alongside the living room, these planters, and the overall orientation of this home allow ample ventilation, natural light, and air to flow through at all times of the day.
