  • This Home in Pune Includes Traditional Motifs of Maharashtrian Houses | Agneya Designs Pvt. Ltd.

Situated in the heart of the Pashan hills in Pune, Maharashtra is the two-bedroom apartment home, abundant in natural light and surrounded by lush green hills. The owners are a conservative family of three, each with their own different visions of the space. While Mr. Anirudh imagined raw, earthy elements, his parents preferred a more modern approach. The final look reflects a careful balance of both styles.

For an interior space looking over such expansive vistas, the designers draw inspiration from the traditional motifs we often see in vernacular, Maharashtrian architecture. A neutral-white forms the base against a green backdrop, making the space as soothing as a snowscape.

    LIVING ROOM

The living room of this Pune home boasts a feature partition with fluted glass doors and a central wallpaper panel. The black border made of small triangles holds the frame together. Delicately intricate details like these as varying patterns derived from traditional styles have a raw appeal to them.

The lower half wall, painted a deep, muddy yellow lends a subtle earthiness and compliments the rust coloured sofa. The wooden ceiling rafters imitate the raw wooden beams from a different era while the solid, white coffee table makes for the perfect accessory. The minimal design reflects a depth and heritage found in more traditional spaces.

    KITCHEN:

As we enter into the kitchen, there is an immediate onslaught of colours and textures. The overlay of rattan, wood, powder blue laminates and patterned tiles makes for an interesting and warm cooking area.

The Picasso-like pattern of the tiles work well with the quiet nature of the rattan overhead. In an apartment that is otherwise a quaint little haven, this kitchen stands a world apart with its playful mixture of elements.

The home has two bedrooms, both designed to have individual qualities and integrity. While both the rooms have the same inherently minimal style, one uses colour as its primary characteristic and the other hums a blend of patterns.

    MASTER BEDROOM

In a lot of ways, the master bedroom acts as the crown jewel of the house. The predominant stark, whiteness coating over the entire room is almost eerily peaceful. The light bounces off of the plain surfaces, filling the room with natural warmth.

The wooden bars used on the wardrobe shutters are reminiscent of the storage cabinets often found in homes of generations past. The bed back wall features a dainty patterned cushion, alongside a window seat, designed as a space of calm and solitude. A small bird perches over the side table, as a lampshade, casting a glow over these details.

    PARENTS’ BEDROOM:

The plain, white walls continue into the parents’ bedroom and merge with the cream wardrobe shutters. The surface is designed to display the varying textures of the earthy rattan and white flutes. This difference in textures, while keeping the colour monotonous, creates a boundless finish.

The thin, black borders lend an air of sharpness to the wall. The space, overall minimal in its appearance, has striking details such as the black mirror frame, wooden rafters and the delicate art frames.

The sheer beige curtains invite in filtered sunlight, casting a warm halo over the room. The dainty pattern on the curtains, are itself inspired from the traditional artforms of the region.

In contrast, the room’s dramatic feature is the bed back wall, hosting a bright, yellow cushion and a wallpaper above showcasing a vibrant scene from a tropical rainforest. The result is a bold, captivating backsplash framing the surrounding elements of the bedroom.

The modern retelling of these classical facets defines the designers’ vision for the space. The areas link into one another and form a cohesive language. Meticulous attention to detail becomes the highlight. The home is a light-filled sanctum, with a culture of ingenuity and simplicity.
